WVU basketball head coach Bob Huggins is set to resign as coach following a DUI arrest

-

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins is expected to resign after he was arrested Friday in Pittsburgh for driving while intoxicated. According to CBS Sports.

According to Pittsburgh Police, around 8:30 p.m. Friday, they found the driver’s side door of a black SUV open in the middle of the road from Ridge Avenue to Merchant Street.

When police arrived at the vehicle, they found it with a flat, shredded tire.

Police then instructed Huggins on how to move the vehicle off the road to help with the tire.

He struggled to move the SUV off the road and police questioned him on suspicion of intoxication.

Huggins was given a standard field sobriety test, which he failed. He was later taken into custody without incident and taken for further questioning.

Officers also found two garbage bags of empty beer cans in the SUV, which was leased by West Virginia University.

In the criminal complaint, authorities say Huggins did not realize he was in Pittsburgh and was in Columbus, Ohio, for a basketball camp. He doesn’t know how he got to Pittsburgh.

Last month, the university suspended Huggins for three games and took a $1 million fine after he used a homophobic slur on the radio in Cincinnati. In 2004, while the head coach at the University of Cincinnati, Huggins was arrested for a DUI. He pleaded no contest and was fired the following year.

West Virginia University and its athletic department released a joint statement:

“West Virginia University is aware of an incident last night involving head men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins for which he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) in Pittsburgh. We are gathering additional information and will take appropriate action. Review complete.”

Huggins faces charges of DUI and was released by police.

He will appear later for preliminary hearing.

KDKA is still working to independently confirm Hakans’ resignation.
