Train derailment, fire prompts evacuation in western Minnesota town of Raymond

Raymond, Minn. — Residents of a small town in Kandyohi County were evacuated Thursday after an early morning train derailment.

About 22 cars derailed around 1 a.m., BNSF Railway said

Some of the derailed cars were loaded with ethanol and corn syrup and caught fire, the sheriff’s office said.


A section of the city near the crash site was evacuated to a school in nearby Prinsburg.

Raymond was not advised to travel, the sheriff’s office said. Highway 23 is closed from Kandioh County Road 1 to Chippewa County Road 1 due to the derailment and fire, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

BNSF said there were no injuries and there was no estimated time to reopen the rail line.

The Red Cross supported evacuees and emergency responders.

Raymond is a city of about 800 residents located two hours west of the Twin Cities and 14 miles southwest of Wilmer.
