Light and Universal Super Mario Bros. Movie Checking off another significant milestone.
The Nintendo video game adaptation will cross $1 billion at the global box office on Sunday, its 26th day of release. It is the 10th animated film to achieve the feat and the first pre-pandemic animated film to do so.
In North America, Super Mario’As of Sunday, the total is $40 million for a weekend gross of $490 million from 4,204 theaters. Its projected weekend overseas cume was $68.3 million for $532.5 million.
The film broke several records, including ranking as the highest-grossing animated film in Universal history at the domestic box office after Best Picture. Minions: The Rise of Gru ($369.7 million) and the third-highest of any Universal film Jurassic World And ET ExtraterrestrialNot adjusted for inflation.
Globally, it now ranks as Universal’s seventh-biggest film of all time Jurassic World Dominion And Despicable me. It is the fourth biggest grosser of any Hollywood film since 2019.
Thanks to its multi-generational appeal, Super Mario The animation continues to play like an all-audience blockbuster rather than tentpole.
Elsewhere at the domestic box office, Warner Bros.’ Evil Dead Rise It attracted $12.2 million in its sophomore run for $44.4 million from 3,417 locations.
A new offering from Lionsgate Are you God? It’s me, Margaret It opened in third place with $6.8 million from 3,334 theaters. The film was critically acclaimed and received a CinemaScore of A.
John Wick: Chapter 4Another Lionsgate film is expected to come in at No. 4 with approximately $5 million from 2,481 sites, good enough to reach $175 million domestically.
In a funny twist, the reissue Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi Rounding out the top five is $4.7 million from 500 theaters.
Sony and confirmed Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World proves disappointing. The film opened outside the top 10, grossing $3 million from 3,504 theaters.
