Shootout suspense: Digby junior girls advance to district soccer finals

DIGBY – The Digby junior girls advanced to the District finals with a dramatic shoot out win over Middleton.

The Junior Mariners hosted Middleton at the DRHS field Oct. 21 and the teams played to a 0-0 draw through regulation time and through two ten-minute overtimes.

The first round of the shoot out is decided on the total of five shooters.

Kassidy Stark scored for Digby on Digby’s first shot and the first Middleton shooter also scored.

The second Digby shooter missed and the second Middleton shooter put the Monarchs up 2-1.

The next four shooters all failed to score.

Janelle Andrews was Digby’s fifth shooter and she had to score to keep Digby alive.

She put the ball low and in the corner, out of reach of the diving Middleton keeper. Stacey Andrews, in goal for the Mariners stopped the shot from the fifth Middleton shooter.

After the first round of five, the shootout continues one-on-one. The first four shooters all failed to score.

Sarah Roach scored the winner for Digby with a perfectly placed ball, again low and in the corner out of reach of the diving Middleton keeper.

Another big save from Andrews gave Digby the win in Game A of the first round of playoffs.

Clare beat Annapolis 2-1 in Game B on the same day.

Digby now hosts Clare at the DRHS field on Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. for the District championships.

The winner of that game advances to Regionals Tuesday, Nov. 3 at the home field of the Kings/ Hants District champion.
