The Digby U12 girls soccer team are the 2014 Valley champs.
They beat Kings West Dunham 1-0 in the Valley Soccer final on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Jasmine Doucette scored her first goal of the season on a beautiful shot to stretch the twine early in the first half.
The championship tournament started Saturday, Aug. 30 with teams divided into two divisions. The top two teams in each division would play for a spot in the final.
Digby tied their first game Saturday morning 1-1 with Kings West Comeau. Paige Ettinger scored the tieing goal for the Tigers.
Coaches Jonathan Ettinger and Shawna Curry told the Digby girls they’d have to win every game after that to win gold.
Saturday afternoon the Digby girls beat Kings West Dunham 1-0 on a penalty kick from Janelle Andrews mid way through the first half.
The Digby defense, led by Jasmine Doucette and Olivia Daley, had been superb all season and stepped up their game another notch to in the championship tournament, said coach Ettinger.
Keeper Stacey Andrews and the rest of the Digby D would not allow another goal in the tournament.
Sunday in the semis, Digby needed a win against East Kings Kent who were ahead on plus / minus. A tie would not be enough.
The strong Tiger D turned away all attacks and Paige Ettinger scored the winner for Digby late in the second half to put them into the final with Kings West.
“The girls went crazy, the parents were dancing on the sidelines and both Digby coaches had a tear in their eye,” said Ettinger.
“Winning the two gold medals was a great way to cap off the season, but to be honest even if we didn't win anything it still would have been my best season ever as a coach,” he said. “I have never coached any team where each player and parent is kind, polite and just a treat to be around. One thing I do know for sure is that every team in the valley will always be scared of this group of ladies for many many years to come.”
