Dec 2 (Reuters) – An earthquake measuring at least 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines late on Saturday, prompting evacuation orders due to warnings of tsunami waves of a meter (3 feet) or more for some areas and southwestern Japanese coasts.
By midnight (1600 GMT), waves could hit the Philippines and continue for hours, Philippine seismological agency Bivolx said.
The US Tsunami Warning System said some Philippine beaches could see waves up to 3 meters above tide level.
“Boats already at sea during this period should remain in deep water until further notice,” Bivolcs said, urging people living near the coast of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces to “evacuate immediately” or “go farther inland.”
Japanese broadcaster NHK said tsunami waves of up to one meter were expected to hit Japan’s southwest coast about 30 minutes later – at 1:30 a.m. Sunday (1630 GMT Saturday).
Bivolks said it expected significant damage from the tremor itself, but cautioned against tremors.
Local police chief Raymark Gendalan of the coastal town of Hinatuan, near the epicenter, said electricity has been cut since the quake, but disaster response teams have so far reported no casualties or damage.
Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, which is located on the “Ring of Fire,” a belt of volcanoes encircling the Pacific Ocean that is prone to seismic activity.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported a magnitude 7.5 earthquake at a depth of 63 km (39 mi).
The US Geological Survey said the quake registered 7.6 on the Richter scale and a depth of 32 km (20 miles) and struck the Philippines at 10:37 pm local time (1437 GMT).

Kevin Durant passes Moses Malone to join the top 10 scorers in NBA history.
PHOENIX (AP) – Kevin Durant sometimes spends his free time surfing YouTube and watching old clips of NBA greats.
The 35-year-old continues to earn his place among them.
Durant moved into 10th place on the NBA’s career scoring list on Friday night, passing Moses Malone in the second quarter of the Suns’ 119-111 loss to the Denver Nuggets.
“It’s a long journey to get to the bigs,” Durant said. “It’s been a lot of work, a lot of preparation, a lot of people helping me get to this point.”
Durant hit the mark by driving baseline for two points with 50.3 seconds left before halftime. Durant needed 17 points — the 1,003rd of his career — to get Malone into the game.
Durant finished with 30 points, but shot 8-of-25 from the field — 0-of-10 in the second half. He raised his career total to 27,423. Malone had 27,409 in the NBA after starting his career with two seasons in the ABA.
Durant said Malone is one of the most underrated players in league history.
“As a basketball player, I think it’s our job to go back and learn the history of the game and who paved the way for us,” Durant said.
The 6-foot-11 Durant is a 13-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion who has played for the SuperSonics/Thunder, Warriors, Nets and Suns. He played one season in college at Texas before being selected No. 2 overall in the 2007 NBA draft at age 19.
He’s been in the NBA for 17 seasons — missing a full year with an Achilles injury — and has averaged more than 27 points.
Durant averaged 31.3 points, while posting a career-high 32.0 ppg (achieved during his 2014 Kia MVP campaign) while posting shooting splits of 51.8 FG%, 49.3 3P% and 89.6 FT%. He passed Elvin Hayes for the 11th on November 21 against the Blazers.
LeBron James leads the way with 39,124 points and is the only other player in the top 25. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,397) is second, followed by Karl Malone (36,928), Kobe Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292), Dirk Nowitzki (31,560), Wilt Chamberlain (31,419), Shaquille O’Neal (28,596) and Carmelo Anthony ( 28,289).

As baseball fans are glued to their phones all weekend for an update on two-way phenomenon Shohei Ohtani, ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Basson Ohtani shared some new details on what’s left of the sweepstakes.
While some potential suitors have backed away from bidding and others are persevering in landing the Japanese superstar, the Giants’ pursuit of Ohtani is far from clear.
“It would be foolish to count out any high-revenue team, however now the field for Ohtani’s services has been won,” Basson announced Friday morning. “The Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, who were in the initial group, have turned their attention to other players, sources said. Among those confirmed by sources to still be bidding: the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and Angels.
“The San Francisco Giants have long been in love with Ohtani, though it’s unclear where they stand in this sweepstakes.”
The unknown is definitely not out. The Giants may be reticent to respect Ohtani’s desire to keep free-agent meetings private. Passan said last month that if any meetings with teams were leaked, Ohtani would hold them against the organization.

With the House vote to expel GOP New York Rep. George Santos from the chamber, a series of actions are now expected in the chamber and in his state:
In Congress: According to a former member of parliament, expulsion is handled administratively in the same way as a vacancy, including death or resignation. The Clerk of the House assumes control of the office and makes decisions on behalf of that office. They will decide how Santos’ office is disposed of, among other steps. His district office remains intact for constituency needs.
In New York: The Clerk of the House will notify the Governor of New York that there is now a vacancy in New York’s Third District. It’s up to Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul to schedule a special election to replace him. New York state law requires the governor to declare a special election within ten days, with the election occurring “not less than seventy days nor more than eighty days” after the proclamation.
However: There is some fungus. Following the resignation of Rep. Tom Reed, the 10-day or 70-80 day parameters for scheduling special elections were not followed. TAIPEI, Dec 1 (Reuters) – Beijing has offered hundreds of Taiwanese politicians low-cost trips to China, according to Taiwanese sources and documents that have unnerved authorities over a widespread campaign of “election interference”. .
President Tsai Ing-wen and other Taiwanese officials have warned that the election could try to sway voters toward candidates who want closer ties with Beijing, which could define the island’s ties to China. But the scale of the Chinese move has not been previously reported.
Beijing, which claims to rule Taiwan democratically, has stepped up military and political pressure on the island to accept its sovereignty, making the January 13 presidential and legislative elections a choice between “peace and war” and calling the ruling party. When asked for comment, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, China’s top policy body, referred Reuters to its minister Chiu Tai-chan’s comments this week. He said Beijing’s attempts to sway Taiwan’s elections by means including free trips to politicians “show themselves clearly”.
“They have already made it clear that there should be a so-called ‘correct election,’ which means choosing the candidates the Chinese Communist Party wants,” he told reporters without elaborating.
‘Election Interference’
Those taking these trips usually pay their own airfare, but other expenses are covered by Chinese authorities, officials looking into the matter said.
“Election interference has started in the name of group tours,” said a second Taiwanese security official briefed on the matter, adding that Beijing is targeting politicians who play a key role in shaping public opinion for the island’s governing bodies.
More than 300 mayors or village chiefs from populous central Taiwan alone have participated in such trips to China in the past few months, he said.
More than 20 municipal leaders from a district in the capital Taipei joined their families on a China-sponsored trip to Shanghai in September, while more than 10 from an association of local politicians in neighboring New Taipei City joined a trip this week. Two security reports were reviewed by Reuters.
Compared to elections four years ago, Taipei County’s turnout was “significantly increased” and registrations were “very enthusiastic,” a report said. “Some metropolitan leaders have become a window of communication for certain Chinese factions in Taiwan.”
So far this year, more than 1,000 mayors or village heads have joined such trips, more than last time, the second official said, as China targets constituencies where support for candidates campaigning for closer Chinese ties is strong.
Making a legal case is difficult
At the hearing in the southern city of Kaohsiung, prosecutors said they believed the five trips from there were fully funded by China’s Taiwan Affairs Office.
Chinese authorities asked participants to support certain political parties and “oppose Taiwan independence,” prosecutors said in a statement.
“There is no such thing as a free lunch,” Attorney General Hsing Tai-chao said Thursday. He also urged Taiwanese not to accept offers or instructions from Chinese officials when traveling there, saying outside powers are trying to influence citizens in an “unprecedented way”.
Defense officials said it is challenging to build criminal cases against tourists because it is difficult to establish a trail of money to Chinese state-owned companies behind the tours, which Chinese officials often charge far below the market rate.
Taiwan suspended group tours to China through travel agencies after the COVID-19 pandemic, but there are no restrictions on individual visits.
A recent government probe prompted some politicians to be more circumspect about such trips, with the two officials arranging some separately and then meeting in China.

Nov 30 (Reuters) – Tesla’s ( TSLA.O ) long-delayed Cybertruck will start at $60,990, 50% more than CEO Elon Musk said it would in 2019, and appeal to select, affluent buyers, cost analysts said.
Musk said the truck, designed in the form of shiny stainless steel and flat planes, was inspired in part by a car-turned-submarine in the 1977 James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me.”
Its new body materials and unconventional, futuristic styling have added complexity and costs to production, and threaten to alienate utility-focused traditional pickup truck buyers, experts say.
But Musk, who priced the vehicle’s three variants at $60,990 to $99,990, said Thursday that the Cybertruck is “more useful than a truck” and “faster than a sports car.”
He drove the Cybertruck on a stage to cheers from the crowd, then handed off the vehicles to about a dozen customers at an event in Austin, Texas.
“Finally, the future looks like the future,” he said of the truck’s design, showing a video of the Cybertruck towing a Porsche 911 and defeating another gasoline-powered 911 in a short race.
Tesla shares fell 2% in extended trading after ending up 1.6% at $240.08.
Musk did not announce prices for the vehicle at the event, but Tesla’s website listed the prices. Its highest performance variant, the ‘Cyberbeast’, will be available next year, as will an all-wheel drive trim priced at $80,000.
A cheaper rear-wheel drive version will be available in 2025 with an estimated starting price of around $61,000.
“It definitely appeals to an affluent clientele, and they want something unique and quirky,” said Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at auto research firm Edmonds.
“It’s not a large segment of the population that can afford it, especially where interest rates are.”
After Musk estimated in 2019 that the Cyberdrug would sell for $40,000, the vehicle attracted more than a million pre-order holders, who put down $100 deposits. Despite rising raw material costs for EVs, he did not provide updated pricing before Monday.
The new deposit is $250, Musk said Thursday.
The price didn’t come as a surprise to many, said Paul Wattie, an analyst at AutoPacific Consulting. Wattie told Reuters before the event that Cyberdrug would work best with smaller audiences.
A grandstanding showpiece

The Cybertruck, two years behind schedule, is entering the hot pickup truck market to compete with the likes of Ford’s ( FN ) F150 Lightning, Rivian Automotive’s ( RIVN.O ) R1T and General Motors’ ( GM.N ) Hummer EV.
The Rivian’s R1T has a starting price of $73,000, while the F-150 Lightning starts at around $50,000. The larger and more powerful Hummer EV pickup costs more than $96,000.

The Cybertruck, Tesla’s first new model in nearly four years, is critical to its reputation as a maker of innovative vehicles. At a time when the company is grappling with softening electric vehicle (EV) demand and increasing competition, the Cybertruck is also important for generating sales, if not to the extent of the company’s high-volume Models 3 and Y.

The longest version of the Cybertruck can drive 340 miles (547 km), and comes with a “range extender,” or additional battery pack, that extends its range to 470 miles.
In 2019, Musk said the truck could travel 500 miles or more on a single charge.
“A truck, Ford and Chevy are more useful and certainly easier to see out,” said Sam Abulsamid, principal research analyst at Guidehouse Insights.
“I don’t expect a very long-range version of the Cybertruck to get more than 300 miles on the road, as Teslas are always 10%-20% under-estimated in the real world,” he said. Chevrolet notes that the Silverado EV is capable of exceeding its 450-mile rated range.
Musk said that Tesla will reach a production rate of about 250,000 Cybertrucks a year by 2025. He did not update it on Thursday.
During its 2019 unveiling, Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen took a metal ball to demonstrate the truck’s unbreakable “shield glass” window, only to have it shatter.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York appeals court on Thursday reinstated a gag order barring Donald Trump from commenting on court employees after he defamed a law clerk in his New York office. Civil fraud investigation.

TOKYO (AP) — A crew member rescued from the sea after a U.S. military Osprey plane carrying six people crashed Wednesday in southern Japan has died, coast guard officials said.
Coast Guard spokesman Kazuo Ogawa said the cause of the crash and the condition of the five other people on board were not immediately known. Initial reports said eight people were on board, but the US military later revised that number to six, he said.
The Coast Guard received an emergency call from a fishing boat near the crash site on Yakushima Island, south of Kagoshima on the southern main island of Kyushu.
Coast Guard aircraft and patrol boats located one person, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, and the gray debris is believed to be from the plane, Ogawa said. They were found about 1 kilometer (0.6 mi) off the east coast of Yakushima. An empty inflatable life raft was found in the area.
“The government will confirm information about the damage and give high priority to saving lives,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.
The Osprey is a hybrid aircraft that takes off and lands like a helicopter, but can rotate its propellers forward during flight and travel very fast like an airplane. Versions of the aircraft are flown by the US Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force.
The plane took off from the US Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture and crashed en route to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Ogawa said.
Japanese Deputy Defense Minister Hiroyuki Miyazawa said the Osprey attempted to make an emergency landing at sea.
Kyodo news agency quoted Kagoshima prefecture officials as saying witnesses saw flames coming from the Osprey’s left engine.
A Japanese military base in Saga, southern Japan, decided to postpone Osprey flight exercises scheduled for Thursday, it said.
The plane belonged to Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo, US and Japanese officials said. US Air Force officials in Yokota said they were still confirming the information and had no immediate comment.
Ospreys have been involved in several crashes at US and Japanese military bases in the past, including in Japan. In Okinawa, home to half of the 50,000 US troops in Japan, Gov. Denny Tamaki told reporters on Wednesday that he would ask the US military to ground all Osprey aircraft in Japan.
In December 2016, a US Marine Corps Osprey crashed off the coast of Okinawa, injuring two of five crew members and sparking complaints among local residents about US bases and the Osprey’s safety record.
A US Marine Corps Osprey carrying 23 sailors crashed off a northern Australian island in August, killing at least three and seriously injuring at least five during an international exercise.
This is the fifth fatal accident involving a Marine Osprey since 2012, when the death toll was at least 19.
Israeli leaders are fueling war rhetoric following the end of the ceasefire

Israeli government and military leaders resumed war talks on Wednesday as a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas expires.
“I’ve been asking this question for the last few days – will Israel go back to fighting after escalating this phase of our hostage withdrawal? So my answer is unequivocal – yes,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
The ceasefire expires at 7 a.m. local time Thursday (midnight ET).
Netanyahu vowed that Israel would fight to the end.

Army Chief Halevi on Wednesday approved plans for the next phase of military operations in Gaza, according to the IDF.
On Tuesday, Halevi said the Israeli military was using the pause to increase its readiness for war.
“The IDF is ready to continue fighting. We use the days of the pause as part of the framework to learn, strengthen our readiness and approve future operational plans,” Halevi told a group of soldiers in northern Israel.
