In a fight between two knockout artists, Jie Zhang found home first, defeating former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder via KO in the fifth round.

Neither fighter looked particularly impressive, but it was a bad night for Wilder, who again looked tentative as commentators speculated that his career was nearing its end. Both fighters seemed to be well aware of each other’s power, but it was Zhang who found the house.

Zhang clearly hurt Wilder in the second round, but was unable to finish it off. The decision came in surprising fashion when a misplaced right hook left Wilder spinning and opened up for a brutal blow to the face from his opponent.

And it was.

It’s a must-win matchup for both fighters, and it leaves Wilder in an unbelievable position. The former WBC champion has now lost four of his last five bouts and hasn’t looked the same since his loss to Tyson Fury. He has openly discussed retirement in the run-up to this fight, which is now very possible.

Meanwhile, Zhang Jo is alive after stumbling after two wins against Joyce. He lost to Joseph Parker by majority decision in March, but now at the age of 41 is coming off another big win.

Zhang’s win came as part of Queensberry’s victory in a 5v5 against Matchroom, winning $3 million in Riyadh. Here’s how everything went live:

Kaitlyn Clark and Angel Reese beat Fever Sky, 71-70, in first WNBA meeting

Angel Reese and Kaitlyn Clark faced each other on a WNBA court for the first time Saturday, but it was senior Kelsey Mitchell who took the spotlight in the Indiana Fever’s 71-70 victory.

The seventh-year guard scored 18 points to lead the Fever. Surprisingly, Mitchell didn’t score in the first quarter, but picked it up in the second and fourth frames, and was more aggressive going to the basket. Nalisa Smith added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Fever, who won their first home game of the season and second overall.

Chennady Carter led all scorers for the Sky with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting with six rebounds. The four-year veteran dominated the floor, attacking Fever players and checking them hard defensively.

Marina Mabrey added 15 points for Chicago, but missed a free throw with 6.1 seconds left that would have tied the score at 71-71. Indiana was able to prevent Sky from being fouled with a pass into the backcourt that ran out of time.

Clark scored 11 points with eight rebounds, but struggled with his shot after hitting his first two three-pointers. He had five turnovers as Clark and his teammates learned each other’s tendencies on the court.

Reese finished with eight points, going 2-for-9 from the floor. But she made her presence felt defensively in the fourth quarter when Clarke again came out with a punch, especially when Clarke ran into her opponent with an elbow.

Saturday’s matchup will be the season debut for Cardoso, the No. 3 pick in this year’s WNBA draft from defending national champion South Carolina. Playing against her former Gamecocks teammate, Aaliyah Boston, the 6-foot-7 center quickly established herself near the basket and scored six points on 3-for-3 shooting.

Fever had trouble matching Cardoso in the post, but pulled away from giving her the ball after that impressive start. Nalisa Smith’s scoring underneath Boston’s low and stiff defense played a part in that.

Cardoso finished with 11 points and six rebounds, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor, and there was no doubt he could make an impact in the sky right away.

After Thursday’s loss to the Seattle Storm, Clark told reporters, “I feel like a hammer.” Opponents not being called for fouls contributed in part to Clark’s technical fouls. With three for the season, she is now nearly halfway to the seven technicals that would constitute an automatic one-game suspension under WNBA rules.

Sky tested Clarke hard, coming through the lane and continuing the strategy to work for the positive. Late in the third quarter, Carter overthrew Clark while waiting for an inbounds pass. He was called for a common foul on the play, but many thought that warranted a flagrant 1.

The Fever next face the New York Liberty (6–2) on Sunday evening. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. ET. The Sky (3–4) host the Liberty on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. Both games will be televised on NBA TV.

Champions League Final Predictions Real Madrid vs Dortmund: Jude Bellingham, Vinnie Jr to win it all.

0

Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid are playing for the title Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Real Madrid are favorites to win a 15th European title in London and head to the British capital after an unbeaten season in the Champions League. Their top-flight attack took center stage during the campaign – with Jude Bellingham emerging as the tournament’s breakout star with three goals and four assists. Vinicius Jr., Rodrigo and Joselu have five goals each.

Dortmund, meanwhile, cannot be underestimated after all Cinderella races to the finale. They eyed redemption 11 years after losing the final to Bayern Munich at Wembley. They topped a group that included Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and the likes Newcastle United, then met PSG again in the semi-finals to knock out the French champions. Dortmund come into the final with a strong defensive record, as goalkeeper Gregor Kopel leads the Champions League with six clean sheets, but some attacking firepower in Marcel Sabitzer, who leads the assist charts with five.

Here’s what you need to know before the big game, including picks from the experts on the CBS Sports team.

Champions League semi-final qualifiers

Borussia Dortmund vs. Real Madrid

A match to see – Vinicius Jr. vs. Julian Ryerson and Karim Ademi: The Borussia Dortmund right-back could be forgiven for ignoring the tape in Real Madrid’s semi-final win over Bayern Munich. No one really needs to show how brutally effective it is Vinicius Maybe when he gets the scent of weak prey. Real Madrid’s No.7 has been devastating in recent months, saving his most decisive contributions for the biggest games with assists and goals in wins. City of Manchester And Bayern. Dortmund did not slow down the progress of Paris Saint-Germain’s wide forwards in the semi-finals, but they will be tested again on Saturday night.James Benge

Most likely to score – Jude Bellingham: It has been written that the former Dortmund man will come back to haunt his former employers. While Viny Jr is another good shout for this, the England international scoring a goal to seal Real’s latest UCL crown while also getting a hand on Kylian Mbappe feels more likely. Against Los Blancos’ firepower, it’s hard to see Dortmund’s rock solid defense resisting for more than 90 minutes. – Jonathan Johnson

Selection of Man of the Match – Jude Bellingham: I’m going to go with Jonathan here, as all signs point to this being a Jude Bellingham show. Playing his former team in front of his home fans in England, Bellingham will not only get Real Madrid’s winner, but he will also make a defensive switch to help contain Dortmund’s attack. Having already had one of the best debut seasons for a new club we’ve seen, Bellingham will go all the way in the UCL final. – Chuck Booth

Match Prediction: Real Madrid are favorites to win a 15th Champions League trophy, but Borussia Dortmund should not be underestimated given the importance of the final. The Spanish giants, thanks to the work of Carlo Ancelotti, can make history at Wembley and I expect this to happen. Selection: Real Madrid 2, BVB 0. – Francesco Porzio

Israel-Gaza war: Biden unveils Israeli proposal to end conflict

US President Joe Biden has urged Hamas to accept a new Israeli proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, saying “it’s time for this war to end”.

The three-part proposal would begin with a six-week ceasefire in which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would withdraw from populated areas of Gaza.

There will be a “surge” of humanitarian aid, as well as some hostage exchanges for Palestinian prisoners.

The deal would eventually lead to a permanent “ceasefire” and a major reconstruction plan for Gaza.

  • author, Bernd Debusman Jr. & Tom Bateman
  • stock, BBC News, Washington

Hamas said it views the plan “positively”.

Speaking at the White House on Friday, Mr Biden said the first phase of the proposed plan would include a “full and complete ceasefire”, the withdrawal of IDF forces from populated areas and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

“It was truly a defining moment,” he said. “Hamas says it wants a cease-fire. This deal is an opportunity to prove they really mean it.”

He added that the cease-fire would “allow 600 trucks every day to carry aid into Gaza and more humanitarian aid to reach the besieged territory.”

In the second phase, all the remaining hostages, including the male soldiers, will return. The cease-fire would then become a “permanent cessation of hostilities”.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron was among those urging Hamas to agree to the proposal, saying at X that the group “must accept this deal so we can see a cessation of fighting”.

“We have long argued that a cessation of hostilities can be turned into a lasting peace if we are all prepared to take the right steps,” added Lord Cameron. “Let’s seize this moment and end this conflict.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the development in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter. The world is witnessing “much suffering [and] Devastation in Gaza” and “Time to stop”.

“I’m welcome [President] Biden’s initiative [and] Encourage all parties to seize this opportunity for a ceasefire, release of all hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian access. [and] And finally a lasting peace in the Middle East,” he added.

Mr Biden acknowledged in his speech that negotiations between phases one and two would be difficult.

A few days ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it clear that he was adamantly opposed to agreeing to end the war as part of a cease-fire agreement – making Mr Biden’s reference to the end of the war particularly significant.

While the plan includes many details of earlier, ultimately failed talks, the US calls for a permanent cease-fire appear to be a significant concession designed to try to get Hamas to return to negotiations on terms it has already said it would agree to. A permanent ceasefire is one of the main demands of the group.

The third phase of the proposal would include the return of the remains of dead Israeli hostages, as well as a “major reconstruction program” with US and international assistance to rebuild homes, schools and hospitals.

video title, Biden urges Israel to stand behind three-phase Gaza plan

In his comments, Mr Biden acknowledged that some Israelis – including officials in the Israeli government – might oppose the plan.

“I urged the leadership in Israel to stand behind this agreement,” he said. “Whatever [political] The pressure is on.

The US president also addressed the Israeli people directly, saying, “We cannot afford to miss this moment.”

Mr Biden said Hamas was now too degraded to repeat an attack like the one carried out by its fighters on October 7 – a possible signal to the Israelis that Washington is over the war.

In a statement, Prime Minister Netanyahu insisted that the war would not end until its objectives were achieved, including the return of all hostages and the removal of Hamas’ military and governing capabilities. He said the latest plan would allow Israel to uphold these principles.

Hamas, for its part, said it viewed the plan “positively” because of its calls for a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, reconstruction and prisoner exchanges.

The group said it was ready to “deal positively and constructively” with any proposal centered on a permanent ceasefire, provided Israel “announces its clear commitment”.

Another Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations who has seen the new Israeli proposal said the document does not guarantee an end to the war or a complete withdrawal of IDF troops from Gaza.

The plan has been channeled to Hamas through Qatar-based intermediaries.

Faced with mounting civilian casualties in Gaza, President Biden has faced domestic criticism over the level of US support for Israel and called for more to be done to encourage the warring parties to negotiate.

Earlier this week, however, the White House said it did not believe Israeli actions in Rafah would cross a red line and trigger a “major ground operation” that could trigger a potential shift in U.S. policy.

The statement came after at least 45 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air strikes and fire on Sunday.

In a separate announcement on Friday, US lawmakers from both sides of the political spectrum formally invited Mr Netanyahu to address Congress in Washington.

It is not clear when the address will take place.

More than 36,000 people have been killed across Gaza since the conflict began, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The war began in October when Hamas gunmen launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 252 hostages in Gaza.

In the NBA Finals, the Celtics and Mavs face different challenges than they’ve won

0

Each NBA playoff series is its own unique event, with no real point of continuity between the end of one and the beginning of another.

For example, the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the defending champion Denver Nuggets, but that doesn’t automatically make them kings of the hill; A series against the Dallas Mavericks in the next round presented an entirely different set of challenges, and the Timberwolves’ roster was less than capable of handling it. Similarly, the Indiana Pacers’ valiant fight against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals says nothing about what will happen to Boston in the series against Dallas; The prospect of hiring Rick Carlisle, Indiana and Dallas can’t be ruled out.

It’s an important piece of knowledge to hold onto in the coming days as we explore every possible angle in our extended break before the NBA Finals between the Celtics and Mavericks begin on June 6. On Thursday in Minnesota, Boston won 12 of 14 by double-digit scoring.

Using those games as a projection point for what might happen in the NBA Finals is a fatal flaw: The matchup between these two teams will be completely different than what they’ve gone through before. That way, it’s good that Dallas and Boston have a few days off to recalibrate. The formula for winning the next round will be completely different.

2024 NBA Finals Preview: Mavs vs. Major storylines on the Celtics

Take the Celtics, for example, who just finished a series against one of the most intense teams in basketball and now have to match up with a very different team on both ends. The Pacers’ defensive approach, in particular, is nearly 180 degrees from Dallas’. The Pacers have given up the fewest 3-point attempts in the league this season and have been willing to allow drives to the rim until they stop the 3-point streak.

While they did this part poorly against the Celtics — Boston launched 43 triples per game in the conference finals, matching its season total — it’s a starkly different approach from what Dallas has done in its three playoff runs. With rim protectors Derek Lively II and Daniel Gafford trying to protect the basket at all costs, the Mavs held opponents to just 50.2 percent shooting over 2 seconds in the playoffs entering Game 5 against Minnesota.

The Mavs didn’t give up a huge amount of 3s overall, but there was one particular type they were willing to concede — take 3-pointers from opposing centers. The Clippers and Wolves lacked the starting personnel to hurt them, but Dallas’ Chad Holmgren and Jaylin Williams led the Thunder (42 attempts in six games), while Minnesota backup Nas Reed hit 25 3-point attempts. 132 minutes in the conference finals.

Needless to say, this is a very questionable strategy against the Celtics if Kristaps Porziņģis stays healthy (he’s expected to return for the NBA Finals). Porsches is shooting 37.5 percent from 3 over six attempts per game this season, and many of his attempts have been several feet beyond the 3-point line. For that matter, Boston big man Al Horford received 41.9 percent.

Dallas isn’t the only team facing this problem. Keeping rim protectors close to the rim has been a vexing question for Boston opponents, which has seen many original but unsuccessful solutions. For example, Golden State put Draymond Green on Jaylen Brown, kept Green in the paint and dared Brown to shoot 3s in a March game. Brown hit five 3s in the first seven minutes and was on his way to breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring record before the Warriors retaliated.

I was at that game, and my column that weekend further explores the unique dilemmas presented by Boston’s great shooting at each level. Short version: Only teams like Indiana who try to live off basket attacks by taking 3s have a chance against the Celtics. Sure, the Pacers gave up points, but they beat Boston twice in the regular season and had a 3-pointer in Game 1 before fate intervened.

Dallas, by contrast, was a mediocre team in blocking opposing 3s, and played that way again in the playoffs. The big puzzle for the Mavs is figuring out how to dismantle a defensive strategy that was optimized for playing the Clippers, Thunder and Wolves and adapt it to play a very different Boston team. Recent events have not been good on that front; When the Mavs marched into Boston with all their new trade pieces in March, they lost 138-110, Boston shooting 21 of 43 with 3 seconds left.

The Celtics, however, will have to make some adjustments of their own. While Indiana Rock runs the ball down their throats at every possible opportunity, Dallas plays a much slower and more sun-centered style. Yes, the Mavs play opportunistically, but compared to playing the Pacers, it’s like switching from a techno rave to Gregorian chants.

Additionally, the player Dallas controls may be the best offensive player in the league, and he’s working against a defense that essentially has one weakness — not really being able to switch in five positions. We saw how that worked out for Minnesota, the league’s top-ranked defensive team. Can the Celtics really keep up in drop coverage against Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving for 40-plus minutes? Or should they be uncomfortable?

While the Celtics have a bigger roster (for example, they could put Porsches in Derrick Jones Jr. to switch against Dallas’ pick-and-roll game with Lively and Gaffort) and Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, Doncic is two All-Defensive guards. Looked and found every coverage.

Obviously, there’s more to unlock here — Porziņģis and Irving revenge series! Luca’s First NBA Finals! Jayson Tatum Redemption Shot! Reflections of the Grant Williams Era! We’ll have plenty of time to get everything in, but it looks like a relief for these teams interpolation Before this final round. Each will require a complete tactical overhaul.

Google returns AI search answers after asking users to eat gum

0

SAN FRANCISCO — Google said it is reducing the use of AI-generated answers in some search results after the technology made high-profile errors, including asking users to put glue on their pizza and saying Barack Obama was Muslim.

Google began placing artificial intelligence answers at the top of search results for users in the US two weeks ago, but users and search engine experts on Thursday began noticing that far fewer queries were triggering an AI response compared to previous days.

Liz Reed, Google’s head of search, confirmed Blog On Thursday afternoon the company scaled back some of the AI responses, which it called “AI overviews.” The company has reduced the use of social media posts as raw material for AI answers, suspended some answers on health-related topics and added “trigger restrictions to questions that demonstrate AI overviews are not useful,” Reid said in the filing. . The company has made more than a dozen technical changes aimed at improving the system, Reed said.

The change is the latest example of Google launching an AI product with fanfare, then retracting it after it goes wrong. In February, the company blocked users from creating images with its AI imaging tool after conservative commentators accused it of anti-white bias.

The tech industry is in the midst of an AI revolution, with start-ups and big tech giants trying to find new ways to monetize the technology by incorporating it into their products. Many tools are launched before they are ready for prime time, as companies seek to be the first to market their products and present themselves as cutting-edge.

Short stories for quick information

Google, which invented most of the technology-based breakthrough AI tools like ChatGPT, is trying to prove to investors, consumers and its own employees that it can still play an important role in the industry. At its I/O conference this month, the company made more than 100 AI-related announcements.

The big one is that it confirmed that it will start publishing AI-generated answers in search results for most of its users. Google has been testing AI answers for a year with a select group of users, but as it adds them to more search results, most people will now start interacting directly with AI on a tool they use every day.

The technology works by reading websites displayed in Google search results and summarizing them into multi-paragraph answers. Publishers are accused of harming their businesses by taking their content and retargeting it directly to users in search results, potentially losing valuable web traffic.

But journalists, search engine experts and social media users quickly began to spot problems with the answers. Some of the answers were funny and others were concerning. They were also featured in important questions including health related questions.

One answer corrected by Google said that you need to drink a lot of urine to pass a kidney stone. John F. Kennedy graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in six different years, three of which were posthumous.

Google tried to test the tool as much as possible before the wider release, but Reid said the full-scale rollout exposed many scenarios the company hadn’t prepared for.

“There’s nothing like millions of people using this feature,” Reid said.

DFA met reliever Jorge Lopez after the ejection and the glove was thrown into the crowd

0

Even by New York Mets standards, this year’s team has had some notable lows. On Wednesday, those slumps were seen most by Mets reliever Jorge Lopez.

Or should I say former Mets reliever Jorge Lopez after the team? Appointed him for the task Thursday afternoon.

Granted, it didn’t go well for the Mets when Lopez entered the game. Adam Ottavino allowed an RBI single in the eighth inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-3 lead. Lopez took the ball and allowed a double to rookie Miguel Vargas, striking out Mookie Betts, then allowed a two-run homer to the opposite-field, Shohei Ohtani, to push Los Angeles’ lead to 9-3.

Then things got weird.

Lopez threw a 2-1 slider to Freddie Freeman that was low and in, but drew a checkered swing from the former MVP. Lopez believed Freeman had made the play, and argued his case forcefully, until he was ejected by third base umpire Ramon De Jesus.

The right-hander had a few more words for De Jesus and then walked off the mound, throwing his glove into the stands in apparent frustration and walking out to the clubhouse, leaving his team to bring on Josh Walker as a mid-at-bat replacement. .

Freeman continued to walk, and the Dodgers won 10-3 at the Mets, completing the road sweep after winning both games of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Many believed it was a bad look for Lopez. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza agreed, He told reporters after the game Lopez’s glove toss was “not acceptable” and promised to address the matter internally.

Reporters proceeded to interview Lopez, who said some nasty things about the state of the Mets and his place on the team.

Lopez’s response to regretting the glove toss:

“No. I don’t regret it. I think I was probably on the worst team in the entire MLB. What happens happens, so they’ll do whatever they want. I’ll be here tomorrow if they want me to. I’m going to keep doing this.

It should be noted that Some people “Probably the worst team in the whole F***ing MLB,” Lopez was not heard saying. “Worst teammate in all of MLB,” they asked. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com Asked for clarification on that point, Lopez was told he was the worst teammate on the worst team in MLB.

Lopez said “team” and not “team” in his comments on Instagram Thursday morning.

Jorge Lopez / InstagramJorge Lopez / Instagram

Either way, those aren’t the words of a man who expects to be in the clubhouse the next day. It was soon fulfilled.

As Lopez’s words spread across the Internet, several members of the Mets media team, Including Joel Sherman of the New York PostHis tenure with the team is up and the team is reportedly planning to hire the pitcher for the job.

But what a result it was.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MARCH 29: (New York Daily's Out) Jorge Lopez #52 of the New York Mets against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field on March 29, 2024 in New York City. It’s clear the Mets don’t need it right now.

Few expected the team to compete for the NL East after going 75-87 last year and improving only marginally. Still, New York has failed to meet those expectations, holding a 22-33 record after Wednesday and sitting in fourth place in the division.

With a 7-18 record in May, they’ve lost eight of their last nine games. A day earlier, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns admitted to reporters that they weren’t playing like a playoff team, but stopped short of saying they would be sold at the trade deadline.

For perspective, here are the five biggest 40-man salaries in MLB, Through God’s agreementsAnd their current records:

1. New York Mets ($344.6 million): 22-33
2. Los Angeles Dodgers ($329 million): 36-22
3. New York Yankees ($312.6 million): 37-19
4. Atlanta Braves ($265.2 million): 31-21
5. Philadelphia Phillies ($258.6 million): 39-18

Meds are bad and expensive. Billionaire owner Steve Cohen’s fourth season saw them show little beyond a 101-win season in 2022, a division title loss and a wild-card round loss. They have some good prospects thanks to last year’s fire sale, but still rank 13th among MLB farm systems. to the MLB pipeline.

Again, few expected big things from the Mets this season, but it’s not unusual for a financially loaded team to be completely exhausted. There are teams doing worse than them on the field right now, but when you’re up against where you should be, it’s hard to deny Lopez has a point.

Alito tells lawmakers he won’t recuse himself from Supreme Court cases despite flag controversy

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told lawmakers in a letter Wednesday He will not recuse himself from cases related to the 2020 presidential election or January 6, 2021. The US Capitol riots despite concerns over two controversial flags flown on his property.

“The two incidents you cite do not meet the criteria for recusal,” Alito wrote in a letter distributed by the Supreme Court. “As I have said publicly, I had nothing to do with flying that flag. I was not aware of the inverted flag until it was brought to my attention.

The letter was a highly unusual response, underscoring how revelations about the flags have dogged Alito for days. Supreme Court justices rarely engage in back-and-forth with lawmakers, and many members of the court don’t — or don’t — explain their reasons for recusing themselves.

The Supreme Court is weighing key cases related to the 2020 election and the attack on the US capital. In one, the justices are weighing the absolute immunity of former President Donald Trump’s special counsel, Jack Smith, from election tampering charges. In another, a January 6 rioter challenged the impeachment charge filed against him by prosecutors, arguing that the law applies to people who destroy evidence without attacking a government building.
