Body recovered from wreckage on I-95 freeway in Philadelphia

0

PHILADELPHIA, June 12 (Reuters) – Human remains were recovered from a fallen overpass on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia on Monday, as crews removed concrete debris from the site of a fiery weekend highway collapse that closed a stretch of one of the busiest transportation corridors. US East Coast.

The Section of I-95 A tanker truck carrying petrol caught fire on Sunday, causing a concrete curb to collapse, bringing to a standstill in both directions. Officials did not say exactly how the fuel was ignited.

As excavation crews worked to clear debris from the site Monday, a body was recovered from the rubble and turned over to the Philadelphia County Medical Examiner for identification, state police said in a statement.

The truck driver, Nathaniel Moody, was not located immediately after the crash, local ABC affiliate WPVI-TV reported.

During the morning commute, local traffic reporters reported bumper-to-bumper traffic near the collapse and on alternate routes, but few motorists appeared to heed warnings to use public transport or stay home.

“Things are getting worse over time,” KYW News Radio Traffic Correspondent Justin Traffic said at 8 a.m. EST (1200 GMT).

He noted that Mondays are typically a low-traffic day. “Tomorrow will be the real test indeed.”

Workers and investigators spent the morning and afternoon surveying the damage at the scene, as an excavator entered the wreckage and moved massive chunks of concrete where part of the highway had been.

Officials said it will take months to rebuild the section of I-95, a major north-south highway on the East Coast that runs from Miami to the Canadian border in Maine.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the federal government is working with the state of Pennsylvania to repair the highway.

“It’s going to be a big disruption in that region,” Buttigieg said. He didn’t specify a precise timetable for the fix, but said “definitely not days. We’re not talking about a couple if weeks.”

The head of the Federal Highway Administration plans to visit the site, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro issued a disaster declaration Monday, freeing up federal funds to rebuild a stretch of highway used by 160,000 vehicles daily.

He urged residents to find alternatives, take commuter trains or work from home.

Delivery companies UPS ( UPS.N ) and FedEx ( FTX.N ) said they were making the changes.

Buttigieg said the department plans to use emergency relief funds for reconstruction but did not specify the amount.

The closed portion of I-95 is a major route for delivering goods, he said. “It’s not just about the journeys – it’s also the supply chain.”

Andy Herman, a former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, said the bridges were not designed to withstand the heat of a tanker truck fire, which can exceed 2,000 Fahrenheit (1,090 Celsius), and such incidents are not uncommon.

Herman said Sunday’s collapse will spark a debate about changing bridge design requirements, but it’s hard to see how the U.S. can improve the country’s many overpasses.

“That means they’re looking to maintain the basic safety of the bridges as they deteriorate,” he said.

Reddit suffers a major outage after thousands of subreddits are temporarily shut down

0

It’s been a day on reddit. Thousands of communities have temporarily closed shop to protest the company’s changes to the API, which affect many third-party apps. On top of that, the platform experienced “major outages” across its desktop and mobile websites and mobile apps.

“We are aware of issues loading content and are working to resolve the issues as soon as possible,” read a message. Reddit status page until 10:58AM ET. By 11:30 am, the site was loaded again. An update posted at 11:47AM said, “We are seeing improvements across the site and expect the issue to be resolved for most users. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

“The transition of a significant number of subreddits to private caused some expected stability issues, and we are working on resolving the anticipated issue,” Reddit told Engadget in a statement. At 1:26 p.m., the company said the strike had been resolved, avoiding the protest and returning to normalcy.

A bot Part of the protests involved monitoring all subreddits that went private. As you might expect, when Reddit went down there was no bot commission, but It works again.

Reddit said in April it would begin charging for access to its API, which third-party developers have used in thousands of apps connected to the platform, such as moderation tools. While the primary target of the API changes may have been companies ditching Reddit for content to train language learning models for generative AI systems, the move is a significant blow to third-party client developers who many Redditors prefer to the company’s own. Website or Applications.

As a result of the API changes, one of the most important third-party clients, Apollo, is shutting down at the end of this month. Christian Selig, the developer of the program, said that Apollo would have to pay $20 million a year to keep it running. RIF, another widely used third-party Reddit app, will also shut down on June 30.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman supported the API changes in an AMA before subreddits protested privately. He said the new policy is part of an effort to make Reddit profitable. “Reddit needs to be a self-sustaining business, and to do that, it can no longer subsidize commercial enterprises that require large amounts of data usage,” he wrote. “Some apps such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun and Sync will not see this pricing work for their businesses and will shut down before the pricing takes effect.”

UPDATE 1:28PM ET 6/12: He mentioned that the power outage has been resolved.

Scotland’s former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been released without charge after being arrested by police earlier on Sunday as part of an investigation into Scottish National Party (SNP) financial irregularities, the UK’s PA media reported.

“A 52-year-old woman, who was arrested on Sunday, 11 June 2023, as a suspect in connection with investigations into the finances and finances of the Scottish National Party, has been released without charge pending further enquiries. Police Scotland said in an updated statement on Sunday.

A spokesman for Sturgeon earlier confirmed the arrest, telling PA media “Nicola will continue to cooperate with the investigation if and when asked.”

Sturgeon’s husband is former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell He was arrested and released earlier this monthThe group’s treasurer Colin Beattie and officers then raided the party’s headquarters in Edinburgh.

Sturgeon abruptly announced her resignation as First Minister in February after nine years at the helm of the movement for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.

He cited the demands of public life and the “brutality” of mainstream politics for his surprising decision.

But stalled, the party he led for nearly a decade descended into disarray amid a widely publicized police investigation. According to PA Media, authorities are investigating the handling of SNP money for the Scottish Independence campaign.

The group has dominated politics north of the border for more than a decade and pushed for a repeat of the 2014 referendum on independence, in which voters rejected leaving the UK by 55% to 45%.

Sturgeon has enjoyed a series of notable electoral victories in Scotland, where the SNP has led a devolved government since 2007.

But momentum behind Sturgeon’s push for independence has stalled in recent months, with polls showing a drop in support and the Supreme Court last year blocking her bid to hold a unilateral referendum without Westminster’s backing.

Sturgeon was replaced this year when Hamza Yusuf was president A narrow victory in a bitter leadership election That exposed the divisions within the party.

Confusion and legal questions surrounding the party could threaten its stranglehold on Scottish politics, with pro-union Labor resurgent in the nation.

UFC 289 turned out to be a night to remember as the GOAT walked away with his two title belts after another dominant performance.

The legendary Amanda Nunes captured the UFC 289 title at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, making her opponent Irene Aldana look like she didn’t belong, and then retired as the greatest female fighter of all time.

After reclaiming the belt last summer and avenging a submission loss to Juliana Pena, Nunes won her first bantamweight title on Saturday with a unanimous decision against Altana. Nunes won every round on all three judges’ scorecards. Later, he announced his retirement from mixed martial arts with a smile on his face during a post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.

Saturday’s pay-per-view also includes the highly anticipated matchup between Charles Oliveira and Peneil Dariush. On paper, the lightweight showdown was the most interesting and exciting fight of the evening, and it delivered.

Oliveira, a former UFC lightweight champion, has bounced back from losing his title to Islam Makache last October, finishing Dariush in the first round entering the bout on an eight-fight winning streak.

Here’s how the night went:

Manchester City beat Inter Milan 1-0 in a thrilling final in Istanbul to win the Champions League for the first time.

CNN

To achieve game greatness, there must be a defining moment. The Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul was held on Saturday Manchester City, A scene where an obsession finally became a reality History is made.

Since Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Abu Dhabi United Group took ownership of the club in 2008, the ultimate aim has been to win Europe’s premier cup competition.

Billions of dollars have been spent over the past 15 years and controversy has surrounded the club, but now the Champions League will, finally, live long in their memory after a 1-0 win over Inter Milan. The result is better than the competition.

It wasn’t just a night when City won their first Champions League. In defeating three-time champions Inter, Pep Guardiola’s side became only the second English side to achieve the treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

Manchester United were the first to do so in the 1998/99 season, and while comparing teams from different eras is pointless, this City side is certainly as dominant domestically as Alex Ferguson’s United, winning five league titles in six seasons.

The challenge now is to ruthlessly accumulate titles in Europe. After all, it is the series winners of the tournament who are remembered and admired the most.

Rodri captures City’s Champions League trophy winner

It’s a match of few chances, but a lot of intrigue.

Bernardo Silva went close for City in the first five minutes, while Erling Holland had the best chance of the match in the 26th minute, drawing a narrow save from Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Norway’s try came minutes after Nicolo Parella found City goalkeeper Ederson off his line.

As it got in the first half, Inter’s high-energy, aggressive pressing left City with plenty of possession but little to show for it.

The second half was full as Inter continued to defend brilliantly and City continued to probe for openings. However, Inter could have scored at least twice as Rodri put City ahead in the 68th minute, his curling first-time shot past several Inter defenders to cut-back Bernardo Silva.

Federico DiMarco’s header hit the crossbar, while his follow-up effort from six yards struck team-mate Romelu Lukaku. In the closing minutes, Ederson saved a Lukaku header from point-blank range that sealed the trophy for City.

Manchester City have won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League this season.

In September 2008 Sheikh Mansoor – attending his second City game on Saturday – wrote a An open letter For City fans, he told them the owners were ambitious but “not unreasonably” and had taken time to build a team, a club capable of challenging for league titles and European Cups.

The Premier League was captured within four years, the first title won, snatched from Manchester United in the final seconds of the final day of the season, starting an era of dominance that continues to this day.

However, success in Europe has taken longer than many expected. Monaco in 2017, Liverpool in 2018, Tottenham in 2019, Lyon in 2020, Chelsea in 2021 and Real Madrid in 2022: City have consistently lost in the knockout stages of the Champions League. “This match is very difficult to win,” Guardiola told BT Sport after the match.

It was Guardiola’s arrival in 2016 that changed City’s fortunes in the Champions League, although last summer’s acquisition of Haaland made City a force in Europe. The striker admitted this week that he was bought to help win the competition. He “feels the pressure,” he said. Not that his extraordinary 52 goals in a season showed on the pitch, although Inter’s defense in Istanbul kept him on the perimeter and he failed to find the net.

The Norwegian’s goals were key in turning what Guardiola described as a “dream” and “obsession” into reality in the build-up to the game. However, it was Guardiola who was behind the success.

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan (centre) pictured during the final.

It’s hard to believe this is a club playing in the third tier of English football in 1999, struggling to win games let alone trophies. The 2003 move to the stadium, now known as the Etihad, followed by an investment by the club’s Abu Dhabi owners, the likes of which football had never seen before, paved the way for this memorable night in Istanbul.

Will City be as dominant in the Champions League as they are in the Premier League? First, it will lead many to the leadership of Guardiola, a manager described by many as the greatest in the history of the game, a man many of his players have called a genius, and now the first manager to win the treble twice, initially achieving the feat with Barcelona.

Darker clouds may be on the horizon, however, with the Premier League in February accusing City of more than 100 infringements. FINANCIAL RULES OF THE LEAGUE and referring the club to an independent commission. Citi has denied any wrongdoing, saying it was “amazing to report these breaches”.

According to the league manual, It can lead to suspension from the league, deduction of points or an unlimited fine if found guilty.

Umit Pektas/Reuters

City fans have enjoyed unprecedented success under Guardiola.

Whatever the commission’s findings, it may take years, and whether or not success comes with a caveat, the team Guardiola has built is undoubtedly one of the best in history.

On Saturday, all thoughts were about celebrating this season’s feat. A tearful Jack Grealish, the most expensive British player in history, struggled to find words during his live television on-pitch interview.

“This is what you work for all your life. I’m very happy now,” he told BT Sport. “I played very badly today, but I’m not worried. Winning the treble with this group of players is very special…

“This is what I’ve worked for my whole life. To all the people who have helped you along the way, seeing my family in the crowd makes me emotional.

Former New Jersey Governor. Chris ChristieAnother Trump ally and close adviser who has emerged as a key critic of Trump in the 2024 race described the details of the indictment as “ridiculous.”

“It was reckless behavior,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Friday, “and the behavior that Donald Trump engaged in was completely self-inflicted.”

Two planes at Haneda Airport in Tokyo “may have collided heavily,” Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported, citing the country’s transport ministry.

The two passenger planes involved belong to EVA Air and Thai Airways and are believed to have come into contact with each other near a taxiway around 11am, NHK reported on Saturday morning.

It cited the Tokyo Civil Aviation Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) as working to confirm details of the situation.

The broadcaster said there were 207 passengers and crew on board the EVA Air flight and 264 on board the Thai Airways flight. No injuries were reported.

The runway near where two aircraft were parked is suspended, leaving only three operational.

NHK’s airport video footage showed a Thai plane missing part of one of its wings and debris on the runway.

The flight crew can also be seen cleaning up the debris in the video.

The Tokyo Airport Office has sent staff to the area to check the situation.

This is a growing story. A lot more to come.
