Man arrested after standoff at Dartmouth apartment building

The Crown failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a Halifax driver had ample opportunity to safely move to a neighbouring lane after seeing a Halifax Regional Police vehicle parked on the shoulder of Highway 102 in July 2017, a judge has ruled. (FILE)

A man has been arrested after a standoff in Dartmouth on Friday evening.

The 30-year-old was taken into custody after police responded to a report at about 5:40 p.m. that a man was causing damage at an apartment building on Highfield Park Drive.

When Halifax Regional Police officers went to speak to the man he refused to open the door and indicated to police he was armed with a knife.

Crisis negotiation officers and HRP’s emergency response team also responded to the scene.

The man was arrested just after 10 p.m. The investigation is in its early stages and more information will be released, police said in a news release Friday night.
