RCMP investigating fatal collision in Gilbert's Cove, N.S.

GILBERTS COVE, N.S. —

At about 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, July 2, the Digby RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Hwy 101/Route 1 in Gilbert's Cove, Digby County.

In an RCMP media release issued at 10:09 p.m. Tuesday evening, the RCMP said that their preliminary investigation pointed to a vehicle crossing the centre line and colliding with another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle that was struck by the other vehicle, a 44-year-old man from New Edinburgh, was airlifted to Halifax with serious injuries.  The passenger in the vehicle that was struck, a 41-year-old woman also from New Edinburgh, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The RCMP are not releasing the names of the occupants of the vehicle. 

The other driver was transported to Digby hospital with minor injuries.  There were no other passengers in the vehicles.

A short section of the road was closed for several hours. The area was reopened to traffic at 7:30 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing.

"Our thoughts are with the victim's family at this difficult time," said the RCMP's media release.
