The Royal Canadian Navy is looking to identify a sailor with the word infidel tattooed in the shape of a rifle on his arm.

The sailor’s tattoo was on display at a Halifax Tim Horton’s on Tuesday, as he stood in line wearing his uniform and HMCS Fredericton hat.

A man in the coffee shop took his photo and posted it online.

Maj. Mark Gough, spokesman for the Maritime Forces Atlantic Headquarters, said the chain of command is involved in the investigation.

“Any action or behaviour that demonstrates intolerance or shows a lack of respect towards people or cultures here in Canada or elsewhere in not acceptable, so whenever these types of incidents or issues are brought to our attention, we look into it to see what needs to be done to address it,” Gough said Thursday afternoon.

“In this case we’re still investigating to find out the individual that’s involved and what needs to be done with that person,” he said.

“Once we get a hold of the person that’s pictured in the photograph, we’ll go from there. There could be a number of different options we look at.”
