An evening of jazz – acapella style – is in store for those who turn out Sunday evening, May 19, at the Marc Lescarbot theatre in Church Point, where Jazz Affair will take the stage.
Formed a decade ago at Laval University, Jazz Affair is a six-member group (three men, three women) with a diverse repertoire that includes new arrangements of jazz standards and popular songs.
Artists whose work they have performed include Charlie Parker, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Van Morrison, Charles Aznavour and Blondie.
Their Church Point show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The concert is presented by Les Productions le Moulin.
“I’ve seen and heard many acapella groups and I consider Jazz Affair to be one of the very best bands of this kind in Canada,” said Paul-Émile Comeau, spokesman for Les Productions le Moulin.
What sets them apart is not just their versatility -- their ability to perform songs in other genres besides jazz – but also the fact that there are six members, Comeau said.
“Most acapella bands are quartets,” he said. “The six voices in Jazz Affair have a wide range that covers the gamut: soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass. This allows for more sophisticated and nuanced arrangements and percussive effects.”
One reviewer (Journal de Montréal) said the group performs “with charm and intelligence,” while another (Journal Le Fil) said, “Each unique voice completes the blend, creating a full musical universe. We almost forget that there are no instruments.”
A note to those planning to attend Jazz Affair’s May 19 show: Rather than charging the usual ticket price, this one is a pay-what-you-will format.
Les Productions le Moulin, which uses this ticketing approach no more than once a year, recommends that people get a ticket to reserve a seat at no charge.
At the show, an envelope will be provided and audience members will be asked to pay what they wish – cash or cheque – based on how they enjoyed the performance.
The idea of the pay-what-you-will approach, the Moulin group says, “is to increase access to our events and to encourage our patrons to take a chance on new and exciting performers.”
