Activities focus on healthy snacks to make during Christmas

DIGBY, N.S. - A Christmas-themed activity in Digby aims to teach young students cooking skills.

SchoolsPlus and Loblaw’s are teaming up to offer Holiday Themed Cooking Classes for all Digby County students in Grades P to 6.

Stephanie Gagnon, in-store dietician at the Digby Atlantic Superstore, said some of the recipes will focus on healthy snacks instead of the usual sweets featured during the holidays.

“There are different ways to do cooking and having fun with it and showing them that healthy food can also be something that tastes just as good as sweets can,” she said.

Gagnon said children will learn creativity during the Christmas cooking classes.

“We’ll be making little reindeer using Laughing Cow cheese wedges and pretzels for the antlers and little eyes using black olives and a red nose by using red peppers,” she said.

“We’re also going to do little Santa hats using a strawberry for the hat and marshmallows for the pom-pom on top…So the holidays usually revolve around sweets and candy and all of that so we’re going to try to bring a healthier spin-off for Christmas treats that the kids can make for themselves.”

Gagnon said the cooking class with students has been going on at the Superstore on a monthly basis for about a year.

She said teaching youth how to cook is a valuable experience because it teaches them an important skill, fosters confidence and can help bring families together.

“Bringing the kids in the kitchen too is always great for families and it makes it more of a family affair. It’s nice to have everyone involved. Cooking together should be done more often.”

Gagnon added that students who return to the cooking class often tell her how much fun they had trying the recipes at home.

“A lot of the kids say how they’re excited to show their parents when they go home. And those who come back to the classes monthly say, ‘I made this at home and it was a lot of fun’.” 

The cooking class for Grades P-3 will be held Dec. 12 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Digby Superstore community room upstairs.

Grades 4 to 6 will have their class Dec. 14 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the same location.

There is a maximum of 15 students per class with first come, first served. Children must register before hand to attend.
