The goal is a challenging one but if successful will achieve regular delivery of tasty meals to many in the Clare community.

Villa Acadienne, a home for special care in Meteghan, has been providing hot, nutritious noontime meals to the community for the past 25 years.

The meals are available to those in need – seniors and those experiencing difficulty in preparing meals, due to living with a disability, convalescing from surgery or illness, or undergoing medical treatment.

Meals generally consist of protein (examples include: haddock, scallops, chicken or “famous meatballs” in sweet and sour sauce), potato (or occasionally rice) and a vegetable. Traditional Acadian meals such as rapure and fricot are also regularly offered and dessert is included with the meal. Cost of the meal is $5.

Lianne Boudreau-Maltais, director of Nutrition Services/Dietician says currently the service is limited to those who have a means of transportation to come pick up the meals.

“We also offer the option to eat-in and socialize with others using this service,” she said.

Sixty volunteers are sought with the intention that each volunteer would deliver meals one day per month, an approximate commitment of an hour and a half.

The ideal volunteer is friendly and dependable. Requirements include a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Boudreau-Maltais says additional benefits of this initiative include providing a social contact and a safety check.

“There’s also a sense of well-being for volunteers in knowing that our community is working together to ensure that our vulnerable are well cared for,” she said.

Those interested in helping make this project a reality should contact Lianne at 645-2065 or lianne@villaacadienne.ca.

If you want to become a future recipient of the hot meal service, should enough volunteers be recruited to make this a reality, call Boudreau-Maltais at 902-645-2065 or email her at lianne@villaacadienne.ca. The geological boundaries of this service have not been determined at this point.
