About 1.5 million dehumidifiers were recalled; Brands include GE and Kenmore

More than 40 models of dehumidifiers from well-known brands such as Kenmore and GE were recalled Wednesday after incidents of fires and overheating sparked concerns about burn risks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported at least 23 fires and 688 heating incidents totaling $168,000 in property damage. The Samples All of these were manufactured by Gree Appliances in China between January 2011 and February 2014.

1.56 million units are being recalled. The CPSC said consumers should immediately stop use, unplug the dehumidifiers and contact Gree for a refund.

Hyundai, Kia recall 92,000 vehicles

The dehumidifiers came from the Kenmore, GE, Soleus Air, Norbol, and Seabreeze brands, and were sold in stores across the United States, including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Sam’s Club, Sears, and Walmart. They retailed from $110 to $400.

In addition to the recall, the CPSC issued a separate Warning about dehumidifiers manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances Gree urges consumers to check for any recalled models prior to 2013. Between 2016 and 2022, there were four reports of deaths associated with Gree dehumidifiers, the CPSC said.

The Chinese manufacturer and two of its subsidiaries agreed to a $91 million settlement in 2021 Neglects to notify CPSC Millions of dehumidifiers sold in the U.S. are defective and can catch fire. Gree did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the recall.

The CPSC has a list of affected model numbers and information on how to register for a recall on its website, cpsc.gov. Gree posted the recall notice and model numbers on its site, saying it had voluntarily recalled the machines and was “committed to the safety of its customers.”
