Senior girls soccer tie - Digby’s Yuki Hirano scores in final minutes of Clare game

DIGBY – Clare and Digby senior girls tied in their first soccer match up this season.

The Digby County high school teams played to a 2-2 draw on the DRHS field Sept. 28.

The score was tied 1-1 after the first half thanks to goals from Clare’s Sarah Hankinson and Digby’s Aleigha Andrews.

Renee Cleveland put Clare ahead 2-1 early in the second and so the score remained for most of the half.

Both teams had good chances – Digby keeper Addie Hersey made several big saves as did the Clare keeper.

To mention one play, the Digby squad looked certain to score off a corner kick well placed in the middle of the Clare six-yard box.

The ball ping ponged around the front of the net, hit the crossbar once bounced back into play and then was knocked just over the bar.

Digby applied big pressure as the clock ticked down and made several long runs through the Clare defense.

Finally with only a few minutes left, Yuki Hirano broke in alone on the Clare keeper and struck the ball by the rushing goalie to tie it up.

The Digby girls play next in Annapolis on Oct. 4 and are back home again on Oct. 12 against Bridgetown.
