St. Mary's Bay Academy dominates in home opener

ST. BERNARD – St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays made it look easy as they stung the visiting Islands Consolidated School Clippers 85-23 in their home opener.

The Stingrays shut out the Clippers in the first quarter going on a 21-0 run, with Scott Hankinson and Shayne Mullen scoring six points each to lead SMBA.

The Stingrays shut out the Clippers in the first quarter going on a 21-0 run, with Scott Hankinson and Shayne Mullen scoring six points each to lead SMBA.

Islands struggled offensively against the smothering Stingray defence, but lit up their side of the board scoring three points in the second quarter.

Islands settled into the match playing a closer third quarter although SMBA edged the visitors 16-13 to extend their lead.

The teams traded three=pointers as Adam Le and Matthew Thurber of the Islands answered Jacob Gaudet’s pair from beyond the arc in the third frame.

Ethan Mullen poured in 12 fourth-quarter points to put the game away for the Stingrays.

Islands coach Laurier Thurber said this was the Clipper’s first game of the season and it is a rebuilding year for her young team.

“The team struggled in the first half against a more experienced team, but they had a stronger second half and played a much closer game against the Stingrays,” she said.

“We’re starting from scratch and it will take time to improve our game, but I was pleased with their efforts.”

SMBA coach Brian Campbell felt his team played well and was pleased to see good rebounding and hustling after the ball.

“We played a much faster paced game tonight than the one we played against the Mariners last week,” he said. “We shed the sluggish play and picked up the pace of our game. The boys shared the ball and everyone had a chance to score.”

Jacob Gaudet led the Stingrays with 16 points, while Ethan Mullen dropped in 14 and Scott Hankinson added 10 for the league win.

Matthew Thurber scored seven points for the Clippers and Adam Le chipped in six.

The Stingrays travel to Freeport on Nov. 25 for their next game when Islands hosts the visitors for the return match.
