The Digby Mariners senior girls basketball team is 1-1 to start league play after going 4-1 in pre-season exhibition games.
They played a home and home against Annapolis West Education Centre to start the pre-season and won both; 37-22 in Annapolis on Thursday, Nov. 15 and 36-19 in Digby on Monday, Nov. 26.
Kendra Lewis had 11 points in the first game, Mallory Francis and Alice Perucca each scored 9 points. In the second game, Mallory Francois had 13 points and both Kailyn MacDonald and Kendra Lewis each scored 8.
The Digby senior girls competed in the Shelburne Basketball tournament at the end of November.
They played the Shelburne Rebels Friday, Nov. 30 and Digby trailed at the half 18–13.
The Rebels opened up their lead in the second half to win 47 to 28.
Sasha Dunphy was top scorer for Digby with two three-pointers for 6 points. Kailyn MacDonald and Kendra Lewis each added 5 points.
The Mariners played the West Kings Wolverines Saturday morning, Dec. 1.
The Mariners lead the entire game with ajust a small margin making for an exciting game. At half time the Mariners were ahead 26-22; the Mariners’ lead shrunk in the third to 33-30.
But they held onto that three point gap to win 41-38.
Mallory Francis netted 12 points, Kendra Lewis scored 8 points and Kristine McNeil, Sasha Dunphy and Kailyn MacDonald each added 4.
The Mariners’ third game of the tournament was another nail biter against the Liverpool Warriors.
Liverpool led the game right through the first three quarters, going into the fourth ahead by eight: 27-19.
The Mariners allowed only six points against them in the fourth quarter and managed 14 of their own to win 36 to 33.
Mallory Francois led Digby with 11 points, Kendra Lewis added 10 points and Sasha Dunphy netted another 10 points, including two three-point baskets.
The first league game for the senior girl Mariners was on Monday, Dec. 3 against BRHS at the Bridgetown Regional High School.
The Mariners led 29-17 at half time and maintained their lead throughout the game to claim their first league win of 54 to 33.
The high scorer for the Mariners against Bridgetown was Kristine McNeil with 19 points. Sasha Dunphy and Mallory Francois added 11 points each.
The senior girls’ next league game was Monday, Dec. 10 at home against Middleton.
MRHS was leading 32 -13 at the half and held on to win 66 - 37. The overall top scorer was Mallory Francois who managed to get most of Digby’s score with 25 points.
