UPDATED: Digby's Team 911 hangs onto trophy with 9-8 win over CTV No-Stars

DIGBY - Team 911 hung onto the Graham Baxter Cup for another year, squeaking out a 9-8 victory Saturday over the CTV No Stars in an exhibition fundraising game for minor hockey.

After a seesaw first two periods, Team 911, composed of firefighters, police officers, guards, rangers and friends, entered the final frame up 6-5 against the TV stars, cameramen, video technicians and imported ringers.

Team 911 went on a scoring spree for the first half of the third, leaping ahead 9-5 before the momentum swung over to the CTV team, which scored three in a row to make it 9-8 with two minutes to go.

So intent was CTV star and captain Cyril Lunney on the second most important trophy of the year, eclipsed only by the Stanley Cup, he could not resist one last chance to swipe the Graham Baxter trophy during the award presentation.

Alas Lunney will have to wait until next year for his chance at glory.

The hockey game, the 33rd annual confrontation between Digby 911 and CTV No Stars, is a fundraiser for the Clare-Digby Minor Hockey Association, with proceeds from ticket sales, raffles, 50/50 draw and the evening dance in the fire hall going to the young players.

Jonathan Ettinger, co-president of the CDMHA, said it was nice to see all the smiles and all the youngsters, parents, grandparents, and fans at the rink.

“The generosity within this community is really overwhelming,” he said. “Everyone really goes above and beyond this entire weekend. I'm really looking forward to the 34th next year.”

This year the Scotiabank made a matching donation.

Digby’s Bobby Morgan had five points, Justin Wood had four including two goals.
