Digby Mariners take the teachers to school

DIGBY - The DRHS Mariners hockey team outscored a team of teachers 8-5 Saturday, but the big winner was the Digby food bank.

The benefit game—don’t call it a grudge match since it was such a polite affair—raised $510 for the food bank along with food donations.

The game also attracted a crowd that sometimes appeared uncertain who to root for, since the ice has two home teams with familiar players. In the end, both sides earned crowd support for an entertaining game that offered plenty of goals.

The Mariners 2-1 lead after the first period became a 5-5 tie after two when Bobby Morgan added the tying goal for the teachers with 54 seconds remaining. Third period goals all came from the Mariners.

The game also offered a chance to see former St. Francis Xavier goalie Katie Harvieux playing for the Mariners.

The Mariners’ goal scoring was led by Noah Thomas with five, which might lead to extra homework assignments from the teachers. Singles came from Ethan Thomas, Nathan Janson and Dawson Acker.

Joey Amero’s hat trick led the teachers, with Morgan and Justin Oliver adding singles.
