Weymouth Minor Baseball hosted the 2012 Peewee Recreational Provincial Championships at the Weymouth Cricket Field with the Liverpool team winning the gold medal and Hammonds Plains claiming silver.

Teams from Woodside and Westville also competed in the Aug. 24-26 tournament.

The Weymouth Firebirds fell to Liverpool 14-1 in their first game on Friday but finished the day with an 18-11 victory over Westville.

Weymouth’s Sebastian Mullen was named MVP in the first game and Jack Sabine received the MVP award in the second game of the day.

Weymouth dominated Woodside 13-3 in their first game on Saturday with the MVP going to Sebastien Theriault of the Firebirds.

Hammonds Plains edged out the Firebirds 11-10 to eliminate the host team from the championship finals. Raeanne Newell received the MVP award for the Firebirds.

Woodside took third place in the tournament edging Westville 16-15 and Liverpool defeated Hammonds Plains 12-2 for the gold. Overall tournament MVP went to Liverpool’s Alex Karavos.

Tournament spokesperson Gail Robicheau Long said the provincial tournament was very successful.

“Weymouth Minor Baseball thanks the umpires, coaches, teams, parents and Sissiboo Investments Ltd. for helping make the weekend a success,” said Long. “The volunteers made a tremendous effort to maintain the field grounds and man the canteen.”

Long also expressed appreciation to Ray Hupman, a long time Weymouth baseball supporter for being on hand all weekend as the official scorekeeper.

“Ray has been involved with Weymouth baseball for many years on many levels and it was great to have his continued support.”

An Active Kids Healthy Kids grant received from the Digby Area Recreation Commission assisted the Weymouth Minor Baseball in hosting the provincial tournament added Long.
