For the second straight year, Brad Gushue’s Newfoundland and Labrador curling team will play for the Tim Hortons Brier Tankard.

Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker beat Manitoba’s Mike McEwen 7-5 in the Page Playoff 1-2 game in front of another sold-out crowd at Mile One Centre Friday night.

Gushue and Co. have today off before taking to the ice 8 o’clock Sunday in the championship final.

As for McEwen, he plays in Saturday night’s 8 p.m. semifinal against the winner of the Page 3-4 game. That matchup features Team Canada’s Kevin Koe and Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario. First rock will be thrown 3 p.m. Saturday.

Gushue has played in two Brier finals, last year in Ottawa and 2007 in Hamilton, Ont., losing both games.

Gushue has now gone three straight Briers with a 9-2 record in the round-robin.

He won the Page 1-2 last year, as well, taking down the undefeated Jacobs, only to lose to Koe, 9-5 in the gold medal game.

In Calgary two years ago, Newfoundland was 9-2, but lost the Page 1-2 game, semifinal and bronze medal games.
