Trysten Deveau, a grade 11 student at Ecole Secondaire de Clare and a member of the Bushino Ki Karate Club in Church Point, won gold Saturday in her weight division at the North American Cup in Richmond B.C.

The North American Cup is an international event with athletes from Canada, the United States and Mexico participating.

Deveau, the only Nova Scotia female athlete competing in her 53-kilogram weight division, went 4-1 in her fights and in the finals scored 10-0 in the first fight and 9-0 in the second.

The international victory continues the successful path the Clare athlete has been carving.

She also captured gold at the Karate Canada national championships which were held Jan. 17-19, also in Richmond, B.C., repeating a similar performance at the 2013 nationals

While at the January national championships, Deveau was awarded an award for the best overall international performance in the junior division based on her 2013 performances and awards, which included gold at the Commonwealth championships in Montreal in October and a seventh place finish in the World championships in Guadalajara, Spain, in November.

Deveau will participate in a national team training camp with Karate Canada in Toronto in July before heading to the Pan American karate championships in Peru from Aug. 24 to Sept. 1.
