Stingrays in first place heading into regionals

The St. Mary’s Bay Academy senior boys’ basketball team have wrapped up first place heading into regional playoffs.

They stung the visiting Bridgetown Trojans 90-57 in their league final on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

The Stingrays overwhelmed the Trojans with smothering full court pressure as they raced out to a 35-15 lead. Mackenzie Ford paced the Stingray attack with 10 points in the first frame.

SMBA went on a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the second quarter but Lee Richardson’s three-pointer at the 7:20 mark sparked the Trojan offence.

Although the Trojans had greater success breaking the Stingray press the host team extended their lead outscoring Bridgetown 26-18 for a 61-33 half time lead.

Scoring was limited in the third quarter but the Stingrays edged the visitors 9-7. Both teams rallied in the fourth with SMBA holding on to win the quarter 20-14.

Brian Campbell, assistant Stingray coach who was filling in for coach Brad Bright, said that the win was an overall team effort.

“Our pressure defence made the difference in the game as we made good on many of our steals and forced turnovers,” said Campbell. “The boys did a great job pressing the ball in the back court.”

Campbell said this was his third game coaching the team and they were on a roll.

“We lost to Bridgetown earlier in the season so it was good to finish our league play with a win that put us in first place.”

Trojan coach John MacDonald said the SMBA pressure threw his team off.

“The Stingray full court press was awesome and the boys had a difficult time especially in the first quarter,” MacDonald said. “We played a much closer second half.”

All five Stingray starters posted double-digit scoring with Ford pouring in 21 points, Shayne Clements netting 20 and Toby Stone adding 16. Byron Mullen and Brandon Doucette added 15 each for the win.

Chet Deveau scored 15 for the Trojans while Nick Smith and Ethan Stultz chipped in 12 each.

Bridgetown scored five three-pointers to SMBA’s two.

Both SMBA and Bridgetown will see action at Regionals on Feb. 15 and 16.
