Late Tuesday afternoon, Deschenes stopped his police cruiser on the Trans Canada Highway to assist two people in an SUV change a tire when a utility van collided with his police car and the SUV. Deschênes was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two motorists he was assisting were treated and released from hospital. The driver of the utility van was treated at the scene and taken into custody.
As part of the continuing investigation, investigators would like to speak to any motorists who witnessed a dark blue Dodge TK 2008 Cargo Van with Pennsylvania license plate ZBN–8883 travelling eastbound on Highway 2, the Trans-Canada Highway, between Moncton and Memramcook between 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Sept. 12.
Police have spoken to several witnesses and would like to talk to anyone with information who has not yet spoken to the RCMP.
The male driver taken into police custody on Sept.12 has been released on conditions set by the court. At this point no charges have been laid.
The investigation is continuing.
