YARMOUTH, N.S. – The RCMP are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a car and a Department of Transportation snow plow on a Yarmouth County road.
According to the RCMP, the driver of the car, an 82-year-old woman from Belleville, Yarmouth County, died at the scene. She was the only passenger in the car.
The driver of the snow plow was not injured.
The collision occurred just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, on Highway 3, on a stretch of road locally referred to as the Airport Stretch, as it runs parallel to the airport property. The collision scene was just outside the town of Yarmouth boundary.
The roadway was closed to traffic all afternoon and remained closed Thursday evening.
In an RCMP media release issued shortly before 6 p.m., the RCMP indicated the road would remain closed to traffic for several hours while an RCMP collision analyst examined the scene for evidence.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Contacted for comment, Marla MacInnis, a communications spokesperson for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, said, “We are aware there has been a fatal collision involving one of our snow plows. This is a terribly sad incident.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the loved ones of the car’s driver,” MacInnis added.
She said the department is cooperating fully with the RCMP’s investigation into the collision.
