Funds raised will be directed towards purchase of new ultrasound

YARMOUTH - Spring gala guests will be visually transported to the Emerald City of Oz on April 28 at the Mariners Centre, through the efforts of the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation’s planning committee.

“Dorothy in Kansas” will greet guests at the door, then direct them to follow the Yellow Brick Road.

Once they’ve reached their destination, says committee chair Linda Deveau, they will find themselves in the “glow of the Emerald City of Oz for their dinner, games and dancing.”

“Glinda the Good Witch will hand you a welcoming glass of champagne ... and along with the regular activities such as the silent auction, diamond draw and balloon blitz, to name just a few, guests can take home a lasting memory for their garden by playing the poppy game,” she said.

Merimac, a Halifax-based band that plays current pop, classic rock, Maritime Celtic, country, reggae, R&B and more, will provide entertainment.

The annual spring gala is a major fundraiser for the organization, which has raised in excess of $520,000 for the regional health centre over the past 13 years.

Last year, $53,000 was raised to purchase 10 blood pressure monitors for the cardiac department and perioperative nursing.

In the past, funds have been used to purchase items like an MRI and two laparoscopic surgical suites, as well as towards the cancer centre and other essential equipment needs within the facility.

This year, proceeds from the gala will be directed towards the cost of a designated ultrasound for the diagnostic imaging department at Yarmouth Regional Hospital, which serves the tri-county area of Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth. The total cost of the unit is $185,000.

Gala guests will be able to add on to their ticket for a chance to win half of the 50/50 cash jackpot. The add-on tickets are $20 each or three for $50. Advance sales only.

There will be a complimentary photo included in the price of the gala ticket.
