WEYMOUTH, NS – After 27 years with Sissiboo Home Hardware in Weymouth, Arthur Thompson has retired.

On his last day of work on September 29, his coworkers threw a party for fellow staff members and customers to celebrate Thompson’s time at the store.

Jokes and laughter were abundant as Thompson, known for his humour and epic pranks, made his rounds, with a bittersweet edge.

“It’s hard. I know I’ve earned this and I’ll be happy to spend more time with my family, but leaving these people after 27 years is a big step,” he said.

A unique approach to working

Thompson’s presence at the store was a large one, evident through the many stories shared by staff.

“He’s a jokester, all the time – always taping up my tape so I can’t use it, and he even messed up my desk when I was away on vacation,” said acting manager Theresa Simms.

She’s worked with Thompson for 15 years, and said she looked forward to his jokes every day, and that “he’s the best person I ever got to work with.”

Co-worker Lisa Doucette has herself taken part in many of Thompson’s pranks over her 12 years at the store.

“We always taped up people’s tape. That was kind of our thing,” she said.

Storeowner Randy Sabine has known Thompson for over 40 years, and said it was a no-brainer hiring him to work at the store.

Thompson shakes Guy Robicheau’s hand, who congratulated him on a job well done. Thompson will be missed at the store by colleagues, who remember both his hard work and infallible sense of humour.

“He’s an asset. He’ll do anything you ask of him, and always treats the people so well. We’re definitely going to miss him,” he said.

Treasuring the memories

Thompson first started working at the store after Sabine offered him the job.

He treasures his memories of fun times and hard work over his years at the Home Hardware.

“This job takes a lot of work, but we do have fun with it. I think it helps morale,” he said.

Thompson calls his years with the store a time of loyal, dedicated service, a phrase he came up with during the weeks leading up to his retirement.

He’s enjoyed annoying his coworkers by repeating it several times every day, but said today it took on a new meaning for him.

“It’s been 27 years of loyal, dedicated service by Randy to me and my family. He’s done so much for me and my family, and I’m so thankful,” he said.

Thompson also wished to thank his family, his colleagues and the entire Weymouth community for supporting him and the store over the years.

Congratulations, Arthur!
