MIDDLETON, NS - The festival that was named 2017’s winner of the Event Legacy Award by the Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce is back this year and is better than ever with events for all ages July 20-21.

It’s the 33rd year of the Heart of the Valley Festival, and it kicks off Friday evening at both Centennial and Rotary parks and continues all day Saturday until the fireworks and the dance.

In between there will be a strongman competition, arm wrestling championships, a fun run, highland games, basketball and volleyball clinics, a movie, concerts, and softball, ball hockey, and horseshoe tournaments.

This year’s theme is ‘Community Strong.’ ‘Through strength, vitality, and spirit we are bringing people together,’ the festival’s pamphlet reads.

Organizers said that once again the volunteer-driven, not-for-profit event will feature a great mix of old favourites and new exciting events, making it one to remember.

A highlight of the festival will be a Guinness World Record attempt by local athlete Danny Frame who hopes to set a new record for the caber toss. That’s happening Friday evening at Rotary Park and promises to be a crowd pleaser.

A children’s tent at Rotary Park all day Saturday promises great fun for the little ones, and the Grand Street Parade starting at 1:30 p.m. that same day will head down Commercial Street and through the town for a good hour and a half.

Heart of the Valley Festival wouldn’t be Heart of the Valley Festival without the Middleton Fire Department’s Chicken Barbecue, and yes, it’s back and you can get yours between 4 and 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Take a look at the schedule.
