Honours handed out during Digby Fire Department Banquet: Ralph Cummings receives Firefighter of the Year Award


DIGBY, N.S. – The annual Digby Firefighters banquet was held Feb. 17, with various awards and honours given out.

Digby deputy chief Justin Wood and chief Robert Morgan presented Ralph Cummings with the Firefighter of the Year Award at the banquet.

Halifax police Chief Jean-Michel Blais was the guest speaker at the banquet. Blais spoke about his personal experiences with PTSD and offered advice for first responders dealing with what he called “normal reactions to abnormal situations.”

Other awards given out during the banquet included:

• Captain Rick Sabean was presented with the Fire Officer of the Year Award for the second year in a row.

• Firefighter Kenny Walker received a long-service award for 30 years of volunteer firefighting.

• Lieutenant Mike Bartlett was presented with his long service award for 20 years of volunteer firefighting.

• Captain Kevin Manzer was presented with his long service award for 15 years of volunteer firefighting.

• Digby deputy chief Justin Wood and chief Robert Morgan presented veteran Joe Tidd who retired from active duty at the end of 2017, with a thank you for his years of service as a firefighter and chair of the department’s bingo committee.

• Thanks were extended to veterans including Joe Tidd, Peter Turnbull, Charlie Theriault and Bob Handspiker.

• Megan Moore, Deanna Amero, Adrien LeBlanc, Kenny Walker and Ralph Cummings received the Digby Fire Department bowling trophy.

• Firefighter Robert Amero, Digby deputy chief Justin Wood and veteran Joe Tidd won the Digby Fire Department curling trophy.

• Firefighter Nick Ryan, firefighter Digby deputy chief Justin Wood and veteran Joe Tidd won the Digby Fire Department golf trophy.

• Lieutenant Mike Bartlett was presented with the Digby Fire Department cribbage trophy.

• Chief Robert Morgan was presented with the Digby Fire Department Crazy Eights trophy.

• Rick Sabean, Adrien LeBlanc, Adam Sabean and Brandon Trimper receive the Digby Fire Department Hose Laying Trophy.
