By Karla Kelly FOR THE DIGBY COURIER Corey Saulnier and Jordan Cromwell poured in 17 points each to lead Digby Regional’s Mariners to a 56-41 fifth place finish at the Division 3 basketball provincials at SMBA Saturday.

Seeded fifth, the Mariners lost to eventual champions SMBA 66-57 in the opening round Thursday but rebounded with a 69-45 victory over Ecole du Carrefour in the consolation semi-finals Friday.

Kyle Bell also reached double digits Saturday as he chipped in 11 points for the Mariners’ win over Springhill.

Mariner coach Tyler Colwell said the team achieved its goal of reaching the provincial championships. “The team worked hard this season to improve and be competitive,” said Colwell. “We were successful in our goal to reach provincials.”

Ecole du Carrefour from Dartmouth edged out Dalbrae Academy of Cape Breton 52-50 at the buzzer to take seventh place.

In the consolation game, Bridgetown scored a bucket at the buzzer to force overtime but Shelburne Rebels took the bronze medal with a 66-60 win over the Trojans.
