The Mariners advanced after wins on home court over the weekend against Kings Edgehill and Bridgetown.

The girls downed Kings-Edgehill 65-41 Friday night, with Lynn Wall and Alyssa Oliver each scoring 14 points. Megan Miller added 13 for the home team.

Saturday’s game saw the Mariners play strong against Bridgetown in a 66-43 victory that put Digby in first place for Section 2 in the Western Region.

The Mariners were out front 26-16 at the half and extended their lead going on a 20-6 run in the third quarter.

Bridgetown picked up its game in the final 10 minutes and edged out the Mariners 21-20.

Mariner coach Kim Robinson said her team used a full court press against Bridgetown for the win. “I wanted the girls to practice their full court press in this game and we scored points on the turnovers,” said Robinson. “We’ll be going up against New Germany and Shelburne at Regionals and they are two tough teams on the court.”

Jessica Sabean led all scorers with 24 points and Lynn Wall and Alyssa Oliver each chipped in 13 for the Mariner win.

Petra Rafuse scored 10 for Bridgetown while her teammates Alexa Cress, Chantal Cress and Jackie Marshall each added six points.

Bridgetown coach Johnny Marshall said his team’s chances at getting to Regionals depend on the outcome of Monday’s game when Digby hosts Annapolis West Education Centre at 5:15 p.m. “Annapolis and Bridgetown were in a close race coming into the weekend games,” said Marshall. “If AWEC loses to Digby this Monday night, they will host the seeding tournament next weekend and we will advance to Regionals.”

However, if AWEC wins Monday, it advances and Bridgetown will host the seeding tournament. The two top teams from that tournament move on to Qualifiers in Cape Breton on Feb. 27-28.
