The high school senior basketball teams at Digby Regional played almost mirror image games Saturday, but that wasn’t a good thing for the Lady Mariners.

Playing first in the DRHS gym, the boys trampled Middleton Martens 76-28, and took full advantage of the visitors’ short bench of seven players.

The Lady Mariners ran into a quick passing and full strength girls' team from Middleton and wound up on the losing end of a similar score, 72-30.

For the boys’ squad, the win was less important than the preparation, said coach Tyler Colwell later. “We just prepare to play to our strengths and take away theirs,” he said, adding that the important wins need to be in regional and provincial playoffs that start Feb. 20.

Provincials are in early March and are being hosted by St. Mary’s Bay Academy.

It was an unusually chippy game and Middleton—with nine fouls in the first half—had almost as many fouls as points in the first quarter.

The Mariners led 23-8 after the quarter and 45-14 at the half.

The girls’ game saw the Lady Martens use fast breaks and long half-court passes to wipe out any hint of momentum by the Lady Mariners, and Middleton dominated the boards at both ends.

Middleton led 37-16 at the half.

Digby Regional’s senior boys team is heading into a busy week, playing at Islands Consolidated tomorrow (Monday) at 5:30 p.m., and in Shelburne Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The team is at home Friday when it opens a two-day tournament with teams from St. Mary’s Bay Academy, Shelburne and Annapolis West Education Centre.

The tournament opens Friday with Digby meeting SMBA at 5 p.m. and Shelburne against AWEC at 7 p.m. Games Saturday begin at 10 a.m. when Digby plays Shelburne.

The Lady Mariners are at home Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and then again Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
