It was the Stingrays’ first game of the season and coach Darlene Johns said her girls were quite nervous.
“We have a young team with eight of the 10 girls in grade 7,” said Johns. “They were quite nervous and slow to start but played with enthusiasm.”
The more experienced Lady Mariners jumped out to a 25-0 first half lead and cruised to the win with a balanced game at both ends of the court.
DRHS coach Christine Kelly said the win was a team effort with eight of the 10 girls putting up points.
“The girls played well as a team tonight and it gave them a chance to work on improving their defense,” said Kelly. “This was our first win of the season and it gave the girls a boost.”
Top scorer for the Lady Mariners was Sarah Tibbits with nine points while Bailee Locke and Kendra Lewis each chipped in six.
Kayla Wood scored four points and Micaela Sabine added two for the Stingrays.
The Lady Mariners are scheduled to play Monday in Bridgetown in a 5 p.m. game, while the Stingrays host the Islands Consolidated School Clippers tonight at 5:15 p.m.
