Coach Craig Glavin said the team’s toughest and closest game of the weekend came at the hands of the Cape Breton Highlands Huskies.
“We outscored the Huskies in the first three quarters of play and had a comfortable 11-point lead going into the final frame,” said Glavin.
“Our play got sloppy the last 10 minutes of the game allowing them to outscore us 24-19.”
SMBA held on for the 91-85 win, with Chad Lombard scoring 28 points and Patrick Johns netting 21.
Glavin said his team’s best game was against the SCA Wolves.
“SMBA played a better game of basketball and worked to dominate both ends of the court,” he said. “This game was a real team effort.”
Robbie Peters led the Stingray attack with 19 points and Tyler Langford added 18.
SMBA defeated Colchester Christian Academy 76-50 and Northumberland Knight Hawks, an exhibition team, 78-49 to finish off tournament play.
Nick Glavin, Tyler Langford, Chad Lombard and Jordan Cromwell received ‘Player of the Game’ honors.
After a three-week break from basketball, it was good to get the team on the floor to put into practice their plays, shots and passes, Glavin said.
“The boys had to play tired as their first two games were back to back on Friday night, but it was a good way to start the second half of the season,” he said.
The Stingrays host Digby Regional High School Mariners in a league match today at 5 p.m. and then are in Shelburne Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
