Team members are Lisa Bailey, Ernest Simms, Nikki Speichts, assistant Ryan Francis and coach Jeremiah Moulaison.
The games mark 40 years of Special Olympics in Canada, and this year’s events include athletics, swimming, bowling, soccer, softball, and power lifting in venues at Saint Mary’s University, Dalplex, St. Francis Field, Windsor Park, Stadacona and 12 Wing Shearwater.
Highlights of the weekend’s events included the arrival Friday of the games torch by the Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee. It arrived by boat on the waterfront in the midst of the Tall Ships and then was carried through city streets to the opening ceremonies where athletes and spectators were be treated to a performance by Canadian Idol finalist Dwight d’Eon and the Halifax Cheer Elite group.
Festivities conclude Sunday after medal presentation to the athletes.
Special Olympics Nova Scotia is a registered, non-profit charitable organization with a mandate to provide opportunities for people with an intellectual disability to participate to their level of choice in quality sport training programs and competitive experiences.
Digby team bowling in Special Olympics
A bowling team from Digby is hoping to earn a medal today when more than 900 athletes take part in the province’s Special Olympics in Halifax and Dartmouth.
