St. Mary’s Bay Academy handed out sports awards during its annual athletic banquet June 11.

Topping the awards were exemplary participation certificates from the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation for students Paige Manzer and Chad Lombard, and teacher and coach Steve Atkins.

NSSAF Western regional director Jody Routledge was on hand as guest speaker and took part in presenting the certificates.

SMBA athletes were congratulated for their efforts and achievements and this year the school celebrated three major awards. The senior boys basketball team won the Division 3 provincial championship in March, followed soon after by a provincial wrestling silver medal performance by Aqiki Nikki. Earlier this month, Jordan Cromwell won a provincial track and field silver medal in the high jump.

The school’s sports teams participated in soccer, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, floor hockey, track and field and softball. The following students earned awards:

Senior girls soccer: best offensive player, Alicia Theriault; best defensive player, Jenna Glavin; most improved player (MIP), Allison Robar

Senior girls volleyball: Most valuable player (MVP), Ashley Deveau; MIP, Jaimlyn Wheatley; sportsmanship, Jocelyn Theriault

Junior girls volleyball: MVPs, Abbie Hubbard and Kayla Wood; MIP, Danyelle Arsenault

Senior boys basketball: MVP, Patrick Johns; offensive players, Tyler Langford and Jordan Cromwell; defensive player, Nicholas Glavin

Senior girls basketball: MVPs, Jenna Muise and Giselle Peters; MIP, Samantha Murphy; sportsmanship, Jocelyn Theriault

Junior girls basketball: MVP, Bethany Ryan; MIP, Micaella Sabine; sportsmanship, Laurel Wagner.

Boys wrestling: MVP, Aqiki Nikki; MIP, Marshall Atkins; sportsmanship Brandon Goudey.

Girls softball: MVP, Christina Melanson; MIP, Felicia Gaudett; sportsmanship, Jaimlyn Wheatley; most dedicated, Natalie Comeau

Boys Softball: MVP, Cody Thibault; MIP, Todd Mullen; sportsmanship, Robert Hurst.

Track and field: outstanding juniors, Mackenzie Ford and Kailyn Williams; outstanding intermediate, Jordan Cromwell; outstanding senior, Donovan McNeil.
