The jump took place on the second day of the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation’s track and field championships in Dartmouth.
This was the third time an SMBA athlete has taken silver at provincials and a first time for Cromwell, who cleared 1.75m.
Cromwell advanced to the provincial championships by winning both the district and regional high jump events with jumps of 1.80m and 1.75m respectively.
“I jumped 1.75m in my first jump and my foot nicked the bar when I went over at 1.80m,” said Cromwell. “I thought I was going to tie for first place but the other athlete cleared the mark at 1.80m.”
Cromwell said initially he was disappointed with the second place finish.
“I was kind of disappointed with second place but after thinking about it I figured it was a pretty good finish, seeing I was competing against 14 other athletes and I was the shortest one to make the final four,” he said.
“Last year I came in fifth so I guess I am happy with how the day went.”
Next year’s goal is to capture the gold medal, he added.
Cromwell left the city before receiving his silver medal at the closing track and field ceremonies in order to be at SMBA in time for his sister’s Grand March and prom. He will receive the medal from his coach on Tuesday.
