The Margison Report had concluded that the 56-mile trip to Welshpool was more viable than the 110-mile voyage from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor, and that two or three daily trips could be made on the shorter service through Digby.

At the Provincial track championships, Julie Mackintosh won the 200-metre race, while David Larramore took third in the 100-m, Pat Theriault was second in the 5,000-m, Robert Morgan was third in the 110-m hurdles, and Robert Dugas was third in long jump.
At the Little Cinema was the Disney movie, ‘That Darn Cat’, starring Hayley Mills and Dean Jones.
50 years ago
June 4, 1959 – A heavy rainstorm gullied some town streets when rushing water blocked catch basins, and a torrent of water flooded the basement of Digby Baptist Church.
Using waste oil collected from area service stations, the town was spraying low-lying areas of the town where mosquitoes were breeding. Mayor Victor Cardoza said public health officer Dr. D.E. Black called for the effort.
In Meteghan, some 70 fishing boats took part in the Blessing of the Fleet by the vicar general of the Diocese of Yarmouth.
CP Rail announced the ferry ‘Princess Helene’ would begin Sunday runs on June 21, with same-day ‘go and return’ passenger fares of $3.20.

June 2, 1949 – J.L. Ilsley, former federal finance minister and MP from Digby-Annapolis-Kings, was appointed to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court.
‘Mummy’ Muise of the Digby Ravens hurled a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Annapolis Tigers.
Hundred flocked to St. Alphonse Church to visit the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes where the replica f the Lourdes shrine had been blessed with water from Lourdes, France, that was brought in 1940 by a priest at St. Bernard Church.
Digby Board of Trade announced a beauty contest would be held in conjunction with Dominion Day activities July 1.
Playing at the Capitol Theatre was ‘Body and Soul’, with stars John Garfield and Lilli Palmer.

35 years ago June 6, 1974 – Town council urged creation of a second ferry service to Digby, and asked that before Ottawa consider a new ferry for Yarmouth it first re-examine the Margison Report of 1966 that recommended a ferry between Digby and Welshpool, N.B.
