Digby, SMBA teams sending athletes to Regional championships this weekend

Digby Regional High School athletes are building a great track record—without having a track to practice on.

For the second year in a row, the school’s track team won the Annapolis-Digby district competition between teams Bridgetown Regional, DRHS, Annapolis West Education Center, Islands Consolidated, Middleton Regional and St. Mary’s Bay Academy.

Digby’s athletes won the two-day track and field championship May 13-14 in Bridgetown by more than 100 points, and took first place in four of six divisions—junior girls, intermediate boys, senior girls and senior boys,

The DRHS team came second in intermediate girls and third in junior boys.

Emily Theriault led all junior girls with 46 points, Devon Farris took top spot for the junior boys with 52, Megan Hersey led in intermediate girls with 47, and Cory Saulnier was top athlete for the senior boys.

In the intermediate boys division, Jonathan Deveau took second spot with 46 points and Kalesha McCully was in second place in the senior girls’ classification with 45 points. “We took 41 athletes to Bridgetown Districts and 33 qualified for Regionals in Lunenburg,” said DRHS track coach Kym Roy.

She emphasized that the results were a great tribute to DRHS athletes since the team has no home track for practice. “Lunenburg just spent the last four years fundraising so they could have their own brand new track. (It) sure would be nice to have a track in Digby,” she said.

Athletes who qualify at the Regional championship in Lunenburg will move on to the track and field provincial championships, the largest high school event hosted by NSSAF with over 800 athletes from 180 schools.

SMBA athletes finished with a total of 361 points in the overall standings.

Kailyn Williams was top junior girl with 18 points, Mackenzie Ford placed fourth in the junior boys with 36 points, Jocelyn Theriault earned 10 points in the intermediate classification and Brandon Goudey finished third with 46.

Katie Stephen was top athlete in the senior girl’s classification with seven points while Kyle Lombard earned 28 points in the senior boys’ classification.

SMBA track and field coach Sean Merritt was pleased with the increase in student interest and participation this year. “We’re still a small group compared to other schools at Districts but our results were promising as we head into Regionals,” he said.

Regional track and field events will be held May 29-30 in Lunenburg with a good representation from both Digby and SMBA. With information from Karla Kelly
