Russell Farrell, an American combat veteran whose medals were lost in the mail earlier this year, died Dec. 14 in hospital in Digby at age 86.
He had been in hospital for some time, but was home Aug. 20 when he received replacement medals from Brig-Gen. R.E. Milstead Jr., of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The disappearance of Farrell’s medals was reported in The Courier and in television news broadcasts, and was the subject of an investigation by Canada Post.
The former U.S. Marine had packed his war medals in a box and mailed them to his daughter in California on Feb. 23. The box arrived without the medals
Farrell fought in Guadalcanal, Guam and Iwo Jima, in some of the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific during the Second World War. He was wounded three times and awarded Purple Hearts for his wounds, an American Campaign medal, an Asiatic Pacific medal, a U.S.M.C. medal, a World War II medal, a rifle and a pistol medal, and a lapel pin and bar.
He moved to Parkers Cove in 1974 with his second wife Alice (Anderson), who grew up on the Bay Shore. The couple later moved to Digby and his wife died several years ago.
