Digby’s under 18 girls soccer team beat West Hants 3-1 at DRHS field, Wednesday night Aug. 1.
Andrea Powell opened the scoring for Digby only eight minutes into the first half, knocking a wet and slippy ball by the West Hants keeper.
Digby had a ton of chances in the first half—they missed a penalty shot and the ensuing rebound, put another direct kick over the crossbar and put shot after shot just wide of the net.
With only three minutes left in the first half, Christine MacNeil made it 2-0 for Digby. Just before the half-time whistle, Powell beat the goalie and defenders to a great pass from Madisen Goodwin, and made no mistake: 3-0 Digby at the half.
West Hants came out hard in the second and was awarded a penalty shot barely a minute in. They converted and grabbed some momentum. A yellow card for a rough tackle just a few minutes later took a bit of that wind out of their sails.
Still they pressed most of the second and made it 3-2 with 15 minutes left.
Rough play and then some shoving led to a yellow card for Digby and a yellow and a red for West Hants with only five minutes left.
With the win, the girls’ record improves to an even 4-4-1. This is their second match up with and second win over West Hants this year.
Their next game is in New Minas on Aug. 8.
The girls may be hosting their first playoff game in Digby on Monday, Aug. 13 possibly at 6:30 p.m.
