The Digby Under-16 female soccer team put in an explosive second half this afternoon (Saturday) to down West Hants Ormon and advance to the provincial championships next weekend in Truro.

The Digby Tigers, playing at Digby Regional High School, won home field advantage by defeating Somerset 2-0 on Aug. 22. Today’s game gave the Tigers the Valley District championship.

Digby had three scoring opportunities in the first half, but the ball sailed over the net each time. A goal early in the second half provided a tenuous lead until the third quarter when three goals in quick succession collapsed the West Hants spirit.

The Tigers played solid defence through much of the game, stymieing much of the West Hants offence.

Team coach Charlotte Frankland was attending a wedding in Cape Breton and missed the victory, but a cell phone call minutes after the game let the team noisily tell her of the victory.
