Helping out is a benefit concert Sunday at 3 p.m. with CBC weekend morning show host Stan Carew and his band, the Magpies. Local musician Cody Peck will open the show.
The former Oakdene School was handed over to a community volunteer group in 1995, and over the years the centre received grants for repairs and other projects, said Oakdene Centre chairperson Linda Findlay.
“You can only apply periodically for grants to do major repairs. I’m trying again for 2010 for the roof because all the shingles on the south side have deteriorated,” she said.
With a little nest egg built up, Findlay said the centre can get through this winter but more tenants are needed, otherwise the future “does look pretty bleak.”
The centre has a monthly income of about $750, but bills are running over $1,000, mostly for oil, she estimated.
Classrooms in the building are rented each month for $300 to community groups, local artists and entrepreneurs.
Tickets for Sunday’s concert are available at the door or in advance at Digby Convenience, Cherry Brook store in Bear River, Mark’s Music Store in Yarmouth, Bainton’s Leather in Annapolis Royal or from Findlay at 467-3184.
