St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays finished their provincial run with silver as they fell to Shelburne Rebels, 77-63, in the Division 3 championship game in Annapolis on Sunday.

With the game tied at 10 after the first quarter, Shelburne went on a 13-0 run in the second to pull ahead 33-20 at the half.

Both teams battled an evenly played game in the second half, but Shelburne’s Doug Poole put the game out of reach for the Stingrays as he poured in 52 points to seal the win for the Rebels.

Coach Brad Bright said although he and the team were disappointed with the outcome of the championship game he was proud to walk away with silver.

“We fought for gold and are bringing home silver which is a great accomplishment for the team,” said Bright. “This is the best provincial finish in three years and I am proud of being second in the province.”

Bright had high words of praise for his team as they entered the tournament seeded fourth and upset top seed East Antigonish to play in the championship game.

“The boys never gave up on me and they played with heart, determination and good sportsmanship all weekend.”

Shayne Clements led the Stingrays with 21 points, Mackenzie Ford finished with 16 and Byron Mullen added 11.

East Antigonish claimed the bronze medal with a win over Hants North and Le Carrefour finished fifth defeating the host team Annapolis, 64-60, in overtime.
