SMBA juniors finish league play in second

St. Mary’s Bay Academy junior boys and girls’ basketball teams are headed to Districts this weekend after finishing second in league play behind both Digby junior Mariner teams.

The Stingrays defeated Clare 63-22 at home on Monday night to clinch second place in the final league game of the season.

Ethan Mullen’s 10 points propelled the Stingrays to a 24-5 lead after eight minutes of play. Clare played a closer second quarter with Matt Losier dropping in six points for the visitors. Although they dug deep to create scoring opportunities Clare was unable to close the gap and trailed 36-13 at the half.

Taylor Comeau sparked the Clare offense with the game’s only three-pointer midway through the third quarter.

SMBA outscored Clare 26-9 in the second half for the win.

All eight Stingray players scored with Ethan Saulnier pouring in 18 points, Shayne Mullen netting 15 and Sebastian Mullen adding 13.

Matt Losier led Clare with eight points and Taylor Comeau chipped in seven.

First place Digby junior Mariners hosts the boy’s Districts and will play Middleton in the 10:30 game on Saturday followed by SMBA and Annapolis in the noon game.

The Lady Stingrays advanced to Districts in Middleton on Saturday where they will take on the host team for a 10:30 match up.

Digby Lady Mariners will play the Annapolis Royals in the noon game. Winners of these two games will advance to the championship finals at 3:30 p.m.
