The St. Mary’s Bay Academy senior boys’ basketball team defeated the Digby Mariners 99-42 in league action in the St. Bernard gym Monday night.

Brandon Doucette was strong under the boards for the Stingrays pouring in 12 points as the home team powered their way to a 23-8 first quarter lead.

Logan Hebb’s three-pointer fired up the Mariners but turnovers and fast breaks kept them from keeping pace with the Stingrays in the second quarter.

SMBA secured several offensive and defensive rebounds to double up on the Mariners 30-15 and open up the game 53-23 at the half.

The Mariners played a closer third quarter taking advantage of the Stingray slump but Mackenzie Ford’s 10 points kept the Stingrays out front 19-12.

After sitting out for much of the second and third quarters due to early foul trouble Toby Stone came off the bench to score 10 points sparking the Stingray offense in the final frame.

Stingray coach Brad Bright said the win came as a result of a very good team effort.

“We had the third quarter slump where the Mariners held us scoreless for three or four minutes but we rallied back to finish strong,” said Bright.

Mariner coach Cory Bailey said his team did not stop playing the entire game and was pleased with the hustle they showed against a more seasoned team.

Brandon Doucette led the Stingrays with a game high 24 points while Mackenzie Ford drained 23, Shayne Clements netted 17 and Toby Stone added 16.

Matthew Hakim led the Mariners with 13 points, Daniel Ford and Logan Hebb scored seven each and Tyrice Miller chipped in six.

The win boosts the Stingrays to a 13-2 record and SMBA will host the Bridgetown Trojans on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. league matchup.
