The St. Mary’s Academy senior boys’ basketball team are the December Shootout Tournament champions.
They defeated the Drumlin Heights Eagles 84-43 in the championship final at Digby Regional High School on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15.
The Digby Mariners hosted the Shootout Tournament over the weekend. The Mariners competed against the Drumlin Heights Eagles and Liverpool Warriors in Pool A.
St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays, Bridgetown Trojans and Parkview Jr. Varsity Panthers vied for top spot in Pool B.
The Mariners lost to the Eagles 80-76 in the opening game on Friday, Dec. 14. The Eagles clawed their way to victory scoring 36 of their points from beyond the arc.
Matthew Hakim led the Mariners with 18 points, Daniel Ford netted 17 and Tyrice Miller added 13.
Christian Grant led all scorers with 32 points and Clinton Crowell had 27 for the Eagle win.
St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays prevailed over the Bridgetown Trojans 72-67 in a closely contested second game.
Stingray coach Brad Bright said the game was close but felt the match was a good one.
“It was a tie game at the half and Bridgetown edged us out by one in the third but we came back strong in the fourth quarter to win the game,” said Bright. “We were happy for the win.”
Trojan coach John MacDonald said although it was a fairly even match the Stingrays beat them on the rebounds.
Mackenzie Ford poured in 25 points for the Stingrays while Shayne Clements scored 20 and Nathan Cromwell added 14 for the win.
Chet Deveau had 25 and Ethan Stultz and Nick Smith scored 13 points each for the Trojans.
Digby lost again to the Liverpool Warriors 69-56 in their second game of the tournament Friday night.
Liverpool led 32-27 at the half and continued to pull ahead in the third to win the game.
Daniel Ford scored 18 points, Matthew Hakim had 15 and Tyrice Miller added 12 for the Mariners.
Wendell Weir had a game high 36 points while Wesley Harding scored 17 for the Warrior win.
SMBA won their second game with a 73-44 win over Parkview to claim top spot in their pool.
Mackenzie Ford scored 34 points and Toby Stone had 20 for the Stingrays while Simon Inness led the Panthers with 11 points.
Drumlin secured first place in their pool with an 82 -68 win over Liverpool in the first game on Saturday morning and Bridgetown finished in second place in their pool, slipping by Parkview 58-49 in the second match of the day.
Digby finished the tournament in fifth place with a dominating 78-39 win over Parkview. Five Mariner players scored in double digits.
Matthew Hakim led his team with 15 points, Drew Sabean had 14, Tyrice Miller netted 11 and Logan Hebb and Daniel Ford scored 10 each for the win.
Bridgetown claimed third place with a 68-44 victory over Liverpool.
In the championship final Mackenzie Ford led the Stingrays with 19 points, Shayne Clements scored 17, Toby Stone netted 14 and Brandon Doucette added 14.
Clinton Crowell scored 18 for the Eagles and Christian Grant added 14.
SMBA will see action against the Eagles when they host Drumlin Heights on Dec. 18 for a 7 p.m. game.
