St. Mary’s Bay Academy senior boys’ basketball team went 1-1 in league action on the South Shore last week, defeating Liverpool Warriors 97-59 on Feb. 1 before falling to Shelburne Rebels 80-57 the next day.

Mackenzie Ford and Shayne Clements led the Stingrays as they poured in a combined 49 points in the lopsided win against the Warriors.

Coach Brad Bright said his team played well right from the jump ball, scoring 10 quick points on turnovers from their full court press.

“We ran out to a 58-35 half time lead with the bench making a good contribution,” Bright said. “We were a little sluggish early in the third-quarter but we picked up the pace and finished strong.”

Ford led his team with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Clements finished with 24. Tyrel Comeau netted 20 with 13 rebounds and Layton Hill added 12 for the win.

It was a different story in Shelburne where the aggressive Rebels charged out to a 43-23 half-time lead. SMBA played a stronger second half, taking advantage of Shelburne’s foul trouble.

Mackenzie Ford had 25 points, Shayne Clements netted 13 and Brandon Doucette chipped in 11.

This week, the Stingrays (16-5) travel to Drumlin Heights on Feb. 6, Par-En-Bas on Feb. 7 and will finish off their league play at home against New Germany Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
