Liverpool Lady Warriors top girls’ division, Lady Mariners take second spot

St. Mary’s Bay Academy Stingrays won the Digby Regional High School boys’ basketball tournament while the Liverpool Lady Warriors claimed the girls’ title.

In the first game of the senior boys round robin play on Jan. 13, SMBA Stingrays defeated Digby Mariners 81-44 with Shayne Clements scoring 28 points. Mackenzie Ford netted 18, with Layton Hill adding 15 and Brandon Doucette chipping in 10 for the win.

Drew Sabean led the Mariners with 12 points, and Daniel Ford finished with 11.

West Kings Wolverines topped the Horton Junior Varsity Griffins 65- 54 in the second boy’s game while the Mariners fell to Horton 66-43 in the final game of the day.

Daniel Ford scored 11 points and Devin Robicheau added 10 for the Mariners.

In the first boy’s game Saturday morning, Horton edged the Stingrays 68-66 in an exciting overtime finish. Ford poured in 36 points while Clements scored 16. Sam Crawford had 26 points and Ben MacDonald finished with 17 for the win.

Digby’s Sabean had a game-high 21 points in a 61-45 loss to West Kings as the Mariners finished fourth in the tournament.

The Stingrays and Wolverines battled it out in the final boys’ game Saturday night with SMBA edging West Kings 57-54 to claim the tournament championship.

SMBA led 30-19 at the half with 12 Stingray points scored at the foul line. West Kings closed the gap 53-54 with less than a minute to play but foul trouble proved costly to the Wolverines.

Layton Hill and Tyrel Comeau dropped in three foul shots with seconds to go to extend their lead while the Wolverines scored only one of four shots from the line to give the Stingrays the win and championship.

Based on points, the Stingrays claimed the championship with a one-point edge.

Stingrays coach Brad Bright said the games against Horton and West Kings were very close and exciting games for the team and the fans.

 “The final game was an incredible win,” he said. “The boys played a very disciplined game as they stayed focused all four quarters, I am proud of their efforts this weekend.”

Ford scored 18 points in the final game while Clements added 12 and Hill chipped in 10.

In girl’s action, the Liverpool Lady Warriors took the tournament winning first in a 41-34 victory over the Lady Mariners on Friday. Digby’s Mallory Francis led the Lady Mariners with 14 points in the loss.

Liverpool downed North Queens 46-25 and SMBA 50-24.

Digby finished second with a 49-31 win against SMBA as Mallory Francis poured in 19 points while Andrea Powell added 11. Rachel Johns of SMBA scored 11 points.

North Queens Spartans fell to the Lady Mariners 44-25. Kendra Lewis and Kristine McNeill scored 10 points each in the win.

The Spartans claimed third place defeating SMBA 63-34. Laurel Wagner had 13 points in a losing effort against the Spartans.
